12-5A BOYS SOCCER: Horn blanks Tyler Lee, tightens race for fourth place

Published: Wednesday, March 6, 2013 1:45 PM CST
Tuesday's match against Tyler Lee was not a must-win for Horn.

But the Jaguars understood that a loss would make the climb back into postseason contention a steep one with the regular season winding to a close.

So Horn came out with a playoff mentality and took it to the Red Raiders for a 3-0 victory at Berry Middle School.

The Jaguars (4-3-1-0, 14 points), who got two goals from Taylor Lewis and another from Matt McGlaughlin, move to within one point of slumping Tyler Lee (5-4-0-0, 15 points) for the fourth and final playoff spot.

Rockwall (8-0-0-0, 24 points) remained undefeated with a 2-0 shutout of Mesquite and extended its hold on the 12-5A top spot over idle North Mesquite (5-2-1-0, 17 points) and Longview (5-2-0-2, 17 points), who defeated Rockwall-Heath on Tuesday.

The teams will take next week off due to Spring Break, but there are still some big games to be played on Friday before their short vacation.

North Mesquite will host Longview with second place on the line at 7:15 p.m. at Mesquite Memorial Stadium.

Horn will go on the road to play first-place Rockwall, while Mesquite will try to play the role of spoiler when it plays at Tyler Lee.

FRIDAY

Rivalry games are dangerous and North Mesquite nearly found that out the hard way on Friday.

But the Stallions did just enough, getting goals from Gustavo Rosas and Abraham Vasquez to post a 2-1 victory over winless Mesquite.

The Skeeters' lone goal came courtesy of Alvaro Ollarzabal.

With Longview's win, Horn desperately needed a victory to keep pace in the playoff race and they got it with a 3-1 decision over Rockwall-Heath.

Eliseo Casillas, Carlos Olortegui and Alex Suominen each scored goals to lead the Jaguars to the win, as they remain with three points of the Lobos.
