12-5A BASEBALL: North Mesquite edges Mesquite, Horn takes down Longview

Published: Wednesday, March 20, 2013 2:10 AM CDT
The first stretch of the 12-5A season has not been kind to Mesquite and rival North Mesquite made sure that trend continued on Tuesday with a 4-3 victory.

The Stallions improve to 2-1 in district play, while the Skeeters remain winless at 0-4.

Dennis Harper picked up the win on the mound for North Mesquite, while Hunter Benavidez tripled as one of nine hits.

Horn evened its district record at 2-2 with a 7-4 victory over Longview on Tuesday. The Jaguars jumped to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

The score remained the same until the later innings, when both offenses opened up, but Horn was able to hold on for the win.

Clayton Youngman was the winning pitcher, with Mason Jordan and Brett Harryman each sparking the offense with extra base hits.

The Jaguars will try to push their winning streak to three games in a row on Friday when they play at district-leading Rockwall-Heath. Horn then has a bye on Tuesday.

North Mesquite will hit the road to face Longview on Friday and then host Rockwall-Heath on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Copeland Field with a chance to move up in the standings.

Mesquite needs to get things turned around in a hurry and it will try when it plays Tyler Lee on Friday at 7 p.m. at Tillery Field and on the road at Rockwall on Tuesday.

FRIDAY: Horn takes down Skeeters for first district win

Horn and Mesquite each entered Friday's 12-5A game needing a win after 0-2 starts.

It is the Jaguars who will be able to enjoy their weekend while the Skeeters continue their search after Horn's 7-1 victory at Tillery Field.

Horn's Mason Jordan did the job on the mound to get the win. Carlos Chavez and Trey Leblanc had doubles, but they were two of only three hits for the Skeeters, who have scored just two runs total in three district games.

Brian O'Bannon had an extra base hit for the Jaguars, who pounded out 10 hits after being shut out in their last game.

North Mesquite won after getting only two hits in its last outing against Tyler Lee, but could not pull off the same feat on Friday in an 11-1 loss to Rockwall.

The Stallions got a double from Cameron Henderson but that was about it.

The Yellow Jackets provided plenty of offense, highlighted by home runs by Dustin Angiel and Skyler Bean.
