12-5A GIRLS SOCCER: Jaguars down Mesquite, move into tie for first place
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
After a 4-0 win over Rockwall on Mar. 8, Horn sat just one point behind the Yellow Jackets for first place in 12-5A.
While the Jaguars did not control their own destiny in the race for the district championship, they were determined that if Rockwall were to slip up, even in the slightest, they would be ready to take advantage.
That scenario played out on Tuesday.
That means that Horn (7-2-1-0, 23 points) was able to move into a tie for first place with the Yellow Jackets (6-1-2-1, 23), and with a sweep of the head-to-head series, the Jaguars are now in the driver's seat for the No. 1 seed in the playoffs.
Mesquite is in a fight for its own playoff berth, but could not keep pace with Horn.
Liz Campos opened the scoring for the Jaguars with a goal in the 12th minute. Just five minutes later, Arianna Dunsworth tallied an unassisted goal to make it 2-0.
The Skeeters hung around and stayed within striking distance but Horn put the game away when Adrianna Smith scored in the 73rd minute to provide the final margin.
While the Jaguars' goals are now within reach, it will not be an easy road. Horn must travel to play Longview on Friday. The Lobos were able to secure a playoff berth with their shootout loss to Rockwall and they are looking to build momentum for the postseason.
The Jaguars will then close the regular season on Tuesday against a North Mesquite team that could be fighting for its playoff life.
The race for the fourth and final postseason spot got a lot more interesting with the Stallions' 1-0 loss to Rockwall-Heath on Tuesday.
Megan Cook scored the game's lone goal as the Hawks (4-6-0-0, 12) moved into a tie for fifth place with Mesquite (4-7-0-0, 12) and inched to within two points of North Mesquite (4-4-0-2, 14).
The good news for the Stallions is that they still control their own destiny and they have a very winnable match against last-place Tyler Lee on Friday. North Mesquite needs to take care of business in that match to avoid getting into a must-win situation in its finale against Horn on Tuesday.
Mesquite has a bye on Friday and must hope for a win over Rockwall-Heath on Tuesday and for the Stallions to falter in their final two games.
In addition to the match with the Skeeters, the Hawks also face district co-leader Rockwall on Friday.
