Well-represented: Bulldogs honored in all-district selections

Published: Friday, March 8, 2013 4:58 PM CST
The good times keep rolling for the McKinney North boys basketball team.

The Bulldogs (23-12) recently finished a deep playoff run in the regional tournament, the furthest any McKinney ISD team has ever advanced. North now boasts six players in the recently released all-district honors.

"To be able to land six guys on this list in what is a tough district, I'm just really happy," said Darryll Craft, North head coach. "I'm so proud of all six of them. This wraps up a really nice season."

At the top of North's selections is junior Jola Otubu, who earned Defensive MVP honors for District 13-4A.

"When I told him the news, the smile on his face was unbelievable," Craft said. "He's such a humble young man who's so deserving of that award. He makes things happen because he is such a good defender."

Joining Otubu are senior Bryson Brown and junior Julion Pearre with first-team honors.

"Bryson may have been our most consistent player," Craft said. "He flies under the radar. He's not very flashy, but he'll go out there with hard work and dedication. You knew what you were going to get from him every night. He is a rock solid kid on and off the floor and in the classroom."

Craft was impressed with Pearre's ability to come through in the clutch.

"Julion came up clutch in all our games," he said. "Our district coaches realized how good he was. He always comes up big. Some kids are scared of failing, but Julion is the exact opposite. He thinks about how he can do everything he can for our team."

Juniors Colin Curran and Steele Douglas were honored with second-team selections.

"Both of them can score from outside, both of them shoot it real well, and both of them are just fearless," Craft said. "Colin may be the best shooter I've ever coached. He knocks down shots. And Steele, at the end of the year he was fearless offensively and defensively in the paint."

Junior Kody Wilson, who came on strong during the team's playoff push, earned honorable mention recognition.

"If our season was to go another week, Kody may have been a first teamer, because his work the last five weeks was as good as anybody on our team," Craft said. "He just got better and better and got more confidence. He didn't have any hesitation."

Brown was the only senior among the six players honored, leaving the other five intact for another potentially deep playoff run next year.

As the Bulldogs close the book on their elite 2012-13 season, Craft said the six district selections served as a fitting final tribute.

"It says what type of team we had this year," he said. "To have our kids receive the honors that they got after a tough and grueling season, that's the whole mission. This has been a great season."
