Comic artist slays pledge campaign goal
By J. David Barron, dbarron@starlocalnews.com
To whom are family and friends more important than an artist?
It's a question Flower Mound comic artist Devin Kraft is enthusiastically answering, “None!” after his crowd funding campaign effort on the website Kickstarter reached its initial goal of raising $2,000 in less than a week.
The money pledged on the site will help cover production costs for the first volume of his latest project, the comic “Dragon Slayer.” The campaign runs through the end of March.
“It's like how you don't like movies that are currently out there, say, you don't like the current film landscape,” Kraft explained. “So you can visit Kickstarter and see a bunch of different projects. And by pledging any range of cash amount towards the film you can help with the costs to get it made.
“That's the concept of Kickstarter,” he said. “It's like buying a DVD before a movie is made so you can help fund the film. Kickstarter helps you see what is out there being made. If you pay, say $10, you'll get a DVD or some sort of physical good or service in return for your financial aid or pledge. It's a way of investing in what you want to see.”
Kraft, 25, was heavily influenced by the comic book scene in Japan when he visited there as an exchange student. The result is “'Dragon Slayer' is a Western story with Eastern aesthetics,” Kraft said.
“Dragon Slayer” is a revenge story told from the perspective of two characters. The protagonist is a revered king tracking down the dragon that destroyed his city. A secondary protagonist is a warrior who has his own agenda for wanting to destroy the dragon. But, Kraft added, “It's not what you think.”
To encourage additional pledges now that the initial goal has been realized, Kraft is offering rewards at different donation levels. Those include signed works, as well as exclusive multimedia and digital versions of conceptual pencil and ink drawings.
