The second annual Mission: Pets Alive! conference is slated for March 23 in Irving. The conference has been approved by the Texas Department of State Health Services to help provide Animal Control Officers necessary continuing education credits. ACOs are required to complete 30 hours of continuing education units every three years.

In addition to ACOs, shelter staff, city officials, animal advisory board members, volunteers, animal shelter advocates and enthusiasts are expected to attend the conference where a reported 300 people attended last year, according to Alva Logsdon Cranford, who is spearheading the conference.

Topics covered during the conference which will emphasize the No Kill Equation will include rescue partnerships, volunteers, foster care, trap-neuter-release, pet retention, comprehensive adoption programs, public relations and community involvement, medical and behavior prevention and rehabilitation, and low-cost spay and neuter assistance programs.

“I founded Pawsitively Texas in 2008 with the goal to raise awareness for the needs of the shelters and rescues,” Cranford said. “Through the use of social media we raise awareness for animals in need, advocate for them, find fosters and volunteers, and raise funds for when a pet owner needs financial help, among other things.”

Kelli Anderson was instrumental in founding No Kill! Denton County after an incident that involved a family pet.

“I have been asked to speak at the conference based on my experience [where an animal shelter] killed our family dog in June 2010, and the work my husband and I have done to save animals since then,” she said.

Cranford said the No Kill Equation that will be stressed at the conference has become a crusade.

“Just as generations have corrected slavery, child labor, and equal rights for women and minorities, I believe we have a moral responsibility to correct the needless killing of innocent animals,” Cranford said. “They know love, fear, depression, and other emotions; they serve as pet therapists, guide dogs for the disabled, in wars, and airport security. Studies show that animals can help people lose weight, overcome depression, alert them to pending medical and natural disasters, and more.

“They give so much more than they take. They are not an inanimate item to be cast away.”
