The Frisco Convention & Visitors Bureau's job is to bring visitors and events to the city, and one way the organization does that is by showing Frisco's atmosphere. Now residents will be able to help with that, as the bureau is hosting a new photo contest.

Photos for the "You Be the Tour Guide Photo Contest" are being accepted from residents until April 19 as part of the bureau's goal to "draw visitors and promote tourism in Frisco." Winning photos will be chosen based on their composition, impact (the "wow factor" of an image), creativity, technical merit and promotional appeal.

The contest is open to amateur photographers ages 15 and older.

Denise Stokes, a communications manager for the bureau, said she came up with the idea for the contest after seeing photographs of the city at online photo-sharing websites such as Flickr.

"We use the photos for all our marketing and advertising initiatives," she said. "That includes our visitors' guide and whenever we provide photos to magazines and newspapers we pitch stories to. We always attach photo credit requests when we send the pictures, too."

The grand prize this year, which is valued at $425, will garner the contest's winner a weekend stay at a Frisco hotel, four tickets to the RoughRiders and a one-hour photography lesson from Style Creative Photography.

Second- and third-place winners will receive similar prize packages worth $300 and $260, respectively. Both packages include a one-hour photography lesson from Style Creative Photography.

In addition to the photography lessons, the second-place package including four tickets to an FC Dallas game and a $50 gift card to Randy's Steakhouse, while the third-place package will include four tickets to a Texas Legends game and a $50 Stonebriar Centre gift card.

Frisco ISD students are also encouraged to enter the contest, as the high school with the most entries will receive a $500 donation to its photo journalism department on behalf of Stonebriar Centre. Additionally, a grand-prize high school winner will be chosen to receive a $500 Stonebriar Centre gift card.

Last year, the organization received 183 photo entries, up from 67 entries the contest received in 2010, its first year. Stokes said she expects to receive more than 200 entries this year.

"We're really excited -- it seems like each year, it keeps getting better and better," she said. "The excitement was just so high last year, we're really excited again. The mayor was there to make the announcement. Lots of people that entered showed up to see if they were the winner. We hope to keep building on that."

A ceremony to honor the winners will be held 1 p.m. May 4, at Stonebriar Centre Mall. Mayor Maher Maso will be on hand to announce the winners, as he has in previous years.

In a statement, Marla Roe, executive director of the Frisco CVB, said the organization is excited about seeing photographs that show off the city's attractions and style.

Fawn Jones, last year's winner, said she plans on entering again this year after enjoying the experience of the 2012 contest.

"I've been playing with a camera for years, and my husband and I saw the ad for the contest and thought I should give it a shot," she said. "I never expected to win the contest, and it was such a thrill. [Photography] is something I really enjoy doing. I was actually just in Dallas with my son taking photos [Wednesday] morning."
