Boys soccer: Coppell completes sweep of Hebron

Published: Tuesday, March 5, 2013 5:46 PM CST
In each of the past two seasons, Coppell's boys soccer team saw its year come to an unexpected close with first-round losses to Hebron.

On Friday, the Cowboys (6-0-0) exacted a measure of revenge, completing a regular-season sweep of the Hawks (2-3-1) in District 5-5A competition.

More impressive was the offensive onslaught Coppell unleashed, racking up eight unanswered goals in a 9-2 victory.

Coppell actually fell behind by a goal on a pair of occasions only to draw even both times before eventually pulling away in the second half for good.

"It was an interesting match," said Chad Rakestraw, Coppell head coach. "We actually fell behind on an own goal. But we tied it up a couple of minutes later. We ended up going in front, 4-2, at halftime. We were knocking the ball around pretty good. It's the best we've played in a while."

Justin Todd and Chris Madden scored two goals apiece, while Austin Broyles, Nick Hazelrigg, Mitchell Apple, Jarrett Weaver and Drake Lovelady chipped in scores. The Cowboys also had six different players with assists.

It was the most goals Coppell has scored this year, surpassing its opener Jan. 10 against Tampa Jesuit (an 8-1 victory).

"We started the season strong and we're hoping to end well, too," Rakestraw said. "We got to play all 25 guys. We had guys step in and play off the bench for the last 20 minutes and it was good for some of them to be able to score and build up their confidence."

On Feb. 26, Coppell earned a 1-0 result over Lewisville (1-4-1).

"They're a pretty tough team," Rakestraw said of the Farmers. "They're very good tactically and played us differently than any other team has. Their midfielders were all over the field."

Rakestraw said Lewisville morphed between a 3-6-1 and 3-5-2 formation.

"We made some changes in the second half and did some things we hadn't done since we were in Florida," Rakestraw said. "We played much better in the second half."

Kellen Reid found the back of the net for the Cowboys.

Defensively, goalie Dustin Hodges made multiple key stops for Coppell.

"Lewisville does a good job of creating chances but they don't really have a big-time scorer," Rakestraw said. "Dustin came up big a couple of times and we did a good job of adjusting what they were doing. They had some chances and we cleared them off the line and made another stop inside the box."

Coppell continued Tuesday against Flower Mound (results not available as of press time) before going on the road at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Marcus.

"We've locked up a playoff spot," Rakestraw said. "That was our first goal and now our goal is to win district. We've set ourselves up nicely going forward and if we get two wins this week, we have a pretty good shot of accomplishing that, too."
