Girls basketball: The Colony’s run ends in regional quarters

Published: Tuesday, February 26, 2013 5:02 PM CST
The Colony’s girls basketball team was one of the latest squads to fall to Lincoln in the Class 4A playoffs as the Lady Tigers knocked off the Lady Cougars, 72-50, on Feb. 19.

Lincoln entered as the No. 2 team in the state and went on to qualify for the state tournament Saturday with a win over Frisco Liberty.

“Lincoln is a very strong team and that’s why they’re in Austin,” said Jason Weese, The Colony head coach. “But I’m proud of the way our team battled.”

Lincoln claimed a 18-11 margin after the first quarter before earning a 41-26 lead at halftime.

“They just got hot,” Weese said. “Lincoln hit about nine 3-pointers and that makes them very tough to handle. They shot extremely well.”

The Lady Cougars played evenly in the third quarter, 10-10, but were again outscored in the fourth.

Terra Ellison paced The Colony with 14 points despite fouling out with five minutes remaining.

“She was battling all night and has been our anchor on both ends of the floor,” Weese said.

Taylor Holley followed with nine points for the Lady Cougars, while Libby Waddell chipped in nine.

“We didn’t really have a problem scoring,” Weese said. “Offensively, the last eight games we’ve really been clicking. Taylor and Libby did a good job and hit some shots and Shayla Smith (eight points) stepped up and did a great job as well.”

Weese added that guard Kylie Covington did a solid job attacking and guarding on the perimeter.

“Our seniors did a great job all year of taking ownership of the team,” he said. “That was great to see.”

The Lady Cougars look to bounce back next season but will have to do so with a youthful squad.

“It was big for our three sophomores to get that postseason experience,” Weese said. “And we had three freshmen on the team that got to work out with the varsity team this year and see what it’s all about. They’ve seen the difference in the speed of the game and know what it takes, which is critical for freshmen.

“We’ll take about a week off and start getting back after it next Monday.”
