Mesquite did not play the way it wanted to down the stretch on Friday, but it still was in a good position to play another day.

The Skeeters had squandered much of an eight-point lead, but still had a chance to salt the game away at the free throw line.

Even after missing from the charity stripe, it would take a near-miracle for Richardson to complete its comeback.

Unfortunately for Mesquite, that is what happened.

With the final seconds ticking off the clock, Nylan Yancy knocked down a shot from beyond midcourt and that was the difference between one team moving on and one going home as the Eagles earned a 50-48 victory in a Class 5A area round playoff game at Lake Highlands High School.

Richardson (25-10) moves on to the regional quarterfinals where it will face Plano East, while the Skeeters end the season with a record of 22-11.

Mesquite was hoping to avenge a 67-53 setback in the championship game of the Plano Wildcat Classic back in late December and looked to be on its way to doing just that.

The Skeeters led by two after one quarter and extended that advantage to 27-20 at halftime.

Mesquite was up by eight through three quarters, but the offense went dry from there.

Despite scoring only four points in the fourth period, the Skeeters were stlll in position to win until Yancy's heave found the bottom of the net.

Brandon Scott scored 27 points and Yancy added 12 for Richardson. Alex Cooper scored 18 points and Rashard Higgins had 13 for Mesquite.
