12-5A BOYS SOCCER: North Mesquite comes close, but unable to knock off district-leading Rockwall

North Mesquite was hoping to complicate the race for the 12-5A championship on Tuesday.
With a regulation win over Rockwall, the Stallions could have moved to within a point of first place.
However, as they have done all year long, the Yellow Jackets turned back the challenge, using goals from Jonathan Otto and Clayton Rittershaus in a 2-1 victory.
With the win, Rockwall (7-0-0-0, 21 points) remains perfect in district play and extends its lead on second-place Tyler Lee (5-2-0-0, 15 points).
The Stallions, whose only goal came courtesy of Abraham Vasquez, are in third place (4-2-1-0) with 14 points.
Longview blasted Mesquite on Tuesday, 5-0, allowing them to slide ahead of idle Horn for the race for the fourth and final playoff spot.
On Friday, North Mesquite doubled up the Jaguars in high-scoring affair, 4-2.
Oscar Ocampo scored twice and Martin Martinez and Vasquez added scores for the Stallions. Chris Olortegui and Marshall Street scored for Horn.
Mesquite nearly pulled off its first win of the district season but fell short in a 3-2 shootout loss to Rockwall-Heath. The Skeeters got regulation goals from Ivan Hernandez and Samuel Adesoye.
Mesquite will meet North Mesquite on Friday at 7:15 p.m. at Mesquite Memorial Stadium. The Skeeters will then play at Rockwall on Tuesday while the Stallions are off that day.
Horn will try to make its push back into the playoff picture when it plays at Rockwall-Heath on Friday and at Tyler Lee on Tuesday.
