This past weekend was not what the three Mesquite ISD softball teams had in mind when it comes to building momentum for the start of 12-5A play.

Horn, Mesquite and North Mesquite all suffered through tough times during this past week's tournament play and they will all bring losing records into their respective 12-5A openers.

The Jaguars (5-10) could not find their offense as they suffered four straight losses on Thursday and Friday at the Wylie Tana Jo Thomason Tournament.

Horn was shut out in a pair of losses to Richland (8-0) and Bishop Lynch (6-0). The Jaguars were able to generate a little scoring on Thursday, but it was not enough in setbacks to South Grand Prairie (4-1) and Plano East (5-3).

North Mesquite (1-13) used a strong pitching effort from Tiara Mickens and 10 hits to pick up its first win of the season with an 8-4 victory over Irving MacArthur on Thursday, but that momentum did not carry over.

The Stallions were blanked by Irving Nimitz on Friday in a 10-0 loss. They then managed just a single hit in a 19-0 loss to Azle on Saturday.

North Mesquite did have its offense wake up its the tournament finale against Rowlett, with six runs on 11 hits, but they hurt themselves with 10 errors in a 20-6 setback.

Mesquite (4-13) had similar miseries, suffering four consecutive losses during play at the McKinney/McKinney Boyd Tournament on Thursday and Friday.

Mesquite had a rough go on the opening day. Lily Garza and Sonia Pena had runs batted in but it was not enough in a 21-3 loss to Sulphur Springs. Sara McGuire and Krystal Johnson had the only hits in a 19-0 setback to Plano.

It did not get much better against Ennis, as Monica Rodriguez had two hits and Lindy Kennedy added another, but that was it in a 13-0 loss.

The Skeeters appeared to be on their way to victory against Mount Pleasant when disaster struck. Mesquite had scored in every inning from the second through sixth to build a 6-2 lead, but Mount Pleasant rallied for five runs in their final at-bat to steal a 7-6 win.

Kennedy had a double, triple and RBI, Kelsi Coleman doubled and had a run batted in while Selebrity Winigar and Tristyn Valencia also plated runs.

Mesquite will open 12-5A play on Tuesday with a road trip to Longview. North Mesquite will host Tyler Lee at the Mesquite Girls Softball Complex, while Horn has a bye on the opening day of 12-5A and will play Corsicana in a non-district game.
