Turnbull turning heads

Former Liberty standout Brady Turnbull recently competed in the Big 12 Indoor Championships for Texas and helped the Longhorns win the Big 12 Championship with 135 points.

Texas beat out second-place Oklahoma (108.5) after Turnbull led the distance medley relay team to a second-place finish with a time of 9:42.61.

The former Redhawk also placed third in the 1000-meters after crossing the finish line in 2:24.78.

Turnbull is currently enrolled in undergraduate studies at Texas and is a member of the Big 12 Commissioners Honor Roll. While at Liberty, Turnbull was a multi-year district and regional champion in cross country and track, in addition to leading the Redhawks to a third-place finish at the state cross country meet his sophomore year and becoming the state runner-up during his senior campaign.

Season-opening victory

FC Dallas kicked off its season Saturday with a 1-0 victory against Colorado, in a game that featured a return to the Metroplex from Plano Senior alumnus Dillon Powers.

Powers ended on the losing side after Dallas’ Jackson scored the game’s only goal when Colorado backup goalkeeper Steward Ceus left his box and failed to reach a speculative long ball from midfielder Davis Ferreira in the 11th minute.

The win moves Dallas to 8-4-6 all-time on opening day while the Rapids fell to 5-11-2 in such situations and just 2-8-3 all-time at FC Dallas Stadium.

The Frisco-based soccer club now heads west to take on Chivas USA in a 4 p.m. Sunday matchup.

FOX Sports broadcasting state bball

FOX Sports Southwest will stream or broadcast all games at the UIL Girls and Boys State Basketball Tournaments the next two weekends from the Erwin Center in Austin.

All semifinals and the Class 1-4A Finals for the girls (today through Saturday) and boys (March 7-9) can be streamed at: FoxSportsSouthwest.com. Live telecasts are set for the Class 5A Girls and Boys Championships, March 2 and 9, respectively, on Fox Sports Southwest.

Both finals are set to tip at 8:30 p.m.

Craig Way and Neal Raphael will call the girls finals while Way teams with former Baylor head coach Jim Haller for the boys game.

Revolution routed in opener

The Texas Revolution surrendered 36 unanswered points to begin its 2013 IFL run and never recovered in Friday’s 61-20 season-opening loss to the Cedar Rapids Titans.

Just over a week removed from posting 103 points in preseason action, the Revolution failed to score their first points until 10:44 remained in the third quarter following a 2-yard touchdown pass from Marcus Jackson to Justin Siller.

The game was already out of reach as the Titans racked up 317 yards of offense to Texas’ 144.

Jackson, who passed for just 114 yards on 12-of-42 attempts, found Jeremy Brown for 33 yards for the Revolution’s second score of the night midway through the third and Mon Williams scored on a 5-yard run with 51 seconds left in the game.

The Revolution return to action at 2 p.m. March 17 when they travel to play the Chicago Slaughter.

Title game remains in Frisco through 2016

The NCAA recently announced that it has agreed to a three-year extension with the city of Frisco to keep the Division I Football Championship title game at FC Dallas Stadium.

The venue has hosted the previous two FCS championship games and will do so until at least 2016.

This year’s game featured a rematch of the 2011-12 title game between North Dakota State and Sam Houston State and marked the second consecutive time the game sold out FC Dallas Stadium, which holds more than 20,500 spectators.

At the end of the extension, Frisco will have hosted the title game six time, which is more than any other city other than Chattanooga, Tenn., which hosted the event during a 13-year span from 1997-2009.

Hawkins commits to Bowling Green

The Texas Tornado, members of the 24-team North American Hockey League, recently announced forward Brandon Hawkins’ commitment to play hockey at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

The 18-year-old still has two years of junior hockey eligibility following the 2012-13 season but has taken the league by storm in his rookie year.

The forward currently leads the league in goals scored with 29 and is tied for third with 43 points.

“I liked the idea of Bowling Green more than I did a lot of other schools,” Hawkins said. “It’s a small-town school and I’m really comfortable with that type of feel.”

Hawkins joins CJ Reuschlein, who will play his college hockey at Army, as the only two Tornado players to make NCAA Division I commitments this season. Forward Brett Heikkila commited to Northern Michigan University before ever playing a game in a Tornado uniform.

Buechele returns for fourth season

The Texas Rangers recently announced that former Rangers third baseman Steve Buechele will return for his fourth season as manager of the Double-A affiliate Frisco RoughRiders.

Buechele headlines a 2013 coaching staff that will remain completely intact from the previous season, with Jeff Andrews back as the team’s pitching coach and Jason Hart resuming his duties as hitting coach.

It will mark Buechele’s fifth as a Minor League manager after starting his coaching career in 2009 with the California League’s Bakersfield Blaze. Last year, the RoughRiders finished with an 80-60 record (second-best mark in the league) and an appearance in the Texas League Championship Series.

Buechele’s teams have made the playoffs in every season he has been a manager, while the former Ranger has tallied a 306-253 mark. On April 16 last year, Buechele passed Tim Ireland to become Frisco’s all-time winningest skipper with his 155th victory.

The RoughRiders begin the new season April 4 when Frisco visits the Arkansas Travelers. The team opens up its home slate April 11 when the Travelers come to Dr Pepper Ballpark for a 7 p.m. contest.
