Girls soccer: Lady Jags get over Marcus hump, top Lady M's for first time; Lady Farmers drop Ryan

Published: Friday, February 22, 2013 10:55 PM CST
For three consecutive years, Flower Mound's girls soccer team has managed to earn a draw against a Marcus program it had never defeated.

On Tuesday, the Lady Jaguars finally got a win on the resume.

After falling behind, 1-0, on a goal by Marcus' Natalie Schmutz, Flower Mound rallied to even the contest via Emma Heckendorn before Ariel Leach netted the game-winner in the second half.

"We finally beat them," said Trina Hamner, Flower Mound head coach. "It seems like every year we tie one and lose one. The rumor is that we've never beaten them before. So, it was an exciting and fun time, especially with Marcus coming off their big win against Coppell and our loss against Hebron."

The Lady Jaguars avoided falling to 1-3 in District 5-5A with the win and instead are gaining momentum as the second half of district play draws near.

Hamner added Leach is providing the squad with a spark.

"She's a sophomore new to varsity who is really coming alive," she said. "She's so fast and she's finally breaking through and finishing. It was a real confidence builder for her."

Hamner also credited goalie Jordan Anderson for critical saves to preserve the lead.

Last Friday, Flower Mound was missing multiple players in a 3-0 loss to Hebron. The team also previously suffered a hard-fought loss against Coppell, 1-0.

The team was off Friday before closing the first half of district at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Denton Ryan.

"The girls are pumped because we're back in it," Hamner said. "Hopefully we'll be at full strength in the second half and we can keep picking up wins so we can get in the playoffs and try to avoid being the fourth seed. I'm proud of the girls for that huge win and now we need to carry it over."

While the Lady Marauders fell Tuesday, they were coming off a rout of Coppell last Friday, 8-0.

Katelyn Mountjoy, Schmutz and Dani Murphy scored two goals apiece, while Courtney Forte and Jamie Pugh also recorded goals.

Marcus continues at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday against Hebron.

Girls soccer: Lady Farmers top Ryan

Lewisville's girls soccer team picked up its first win of the District 5-5A season last Friday as the Lady Farmers defeated Denton Ryan, 1-0.

"The girls were really excited," said Becca Willett, Lewisville head coach. "We've competed well in district and it's nice to finally get a win. We're making progress even though we were missing a couple of players."

Bria Williams netted the goal for Lewisville on an assist from Taylor Garrison.

"We had good buildup and then Bria had a great individual effort," Willett said. "We created some additional chances, too, but couldn't put another one in."

On Tuesday, the squad dropped a game against Hebron, 6-0.

"There's not a lot to say about that one," Willett said. "Hebron has a very good team and they got the lead, they were able to put us away."

The Lady Farmers continue at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday against Coppell.

"They're tough," Willett said. "We're going to have our work cut out for ourselves."
