Wrestling: Allen puts on record performance at state, Flower Mound settles for third

Published: Friday, March 1, 2013 6:16 PM CST
The Metroplex was well-represented Thursday-Saturday at the UIL State Championships in Austin as multiple competitors returned home with medals.

But as has been the case in each of the past four years, nobody could stack up to Allen as a team.

The Eagles won the team title for the fourth consecutive year and in the process set state records for points (251.5) and first-place finishers (six).

Allen finished ahead of El Paso Franklin (79) and Flower Mound (66.5), while Canyon Randall (95) took the top spot at the 4A level. Rounding out the local squads in 4A were Creekview in eighth (54), The Colony in ninth (53) and Newman Smith in a tie for 67th.

"Overall, I thought we did as well as we possibly could have given the number of competitors we had," said Steve Davis, Flower Mound head coach. "We were kind of hampered by a tough district and a tough region. A team like El Paso Franklin sent 11 guys and they had kids that weren't in the top six but were good enough to win a couple of matches and accumulate points."

This season, the Jaguars resided in Region II, which produced 17 of the 24 state finalists.

Following Flower Mound on the boys side were Carroll in 18th (30), Marcus in 20th (28.5), Hebron in 30th (18), Coppell in 35th (13) and Lewisville in 63rd (3).

In girls action, R.L. Turner took seventh (42.50), with Lewisville in ninth (38) and Coppell in 22nd (25). In 4A, Creekview tied for 33rd (9).

The Jaguars were paced by first-place finishes from Dylan Akers (126), while brother Scott won silver (145). Rounding out the medalists for Flower Mound was Drake Dudley in second (160).

Dylan became the first two-time state champ in any sport at Flower Mound and capped off a perfect season in the process (35-0).

"Dylan was totally dominant," Davis said. "He was head and shoulders above anyone else in his weight class."

Scott and Dudley, meanwhile, are the first four-time state placers in program history. Scott previously won a state title last year, while Dudley claimed a title as a sophomore.

"Drake had a repeat of the regional final (against Bo Nichol) who was the folk style national champ," Davis said. "That's the exact style we wrestle and he is the best in the nation, but Drake gave him all he could handle. And Scott lost to a USA Wrestling High School All-American. They both faced opponents with great pedigrees."

Each of Flower Mound's medalists will be graduation this year.

"It's the end of an era for us," Davis said. "We're kind of going to be starting over. We scored 68.5 points and only bring back one of our team points. We're pushing some of younger kids to participate more this spring and summer to try and continue this legacy. We have to make up some ground to stay on this roll."

The Jaguars have finished in the top three at state in each of the past four years.

For Coppell, Daniel Murillo took fourth (132), while Hebron's Patrick Davis (120) finished third.

Marcus' Dylan Ross notched fourth (152) where Carroll's Michael Basler earned fifth. Results were flipped at 195 with Cody Lindberg taking fourth for the Dragons and Marcus' Brandon Litten earning fifth.

Lindberg becomes the fourth Carroll wrestler to place at state in consecutive years and knocked off a placer and finalist from last year in the process. Basler took down the No. 1 seed en route to fifth.

Lewisville's Jacob Pisana (138) also competed, going 2-2.

"Dylan fought through a lot of adversity this season," said Mike Prado, Marcus head coach. "He couldn't finish the season last year and had a broken toe this year. It was a good pay off for him."

Litten was also battling through an injury that occurred just two weeks ago.

"He kind of limped out of regionals and into state," Prado said. "He lost two squeakers and his only losses this year were the two close ones at state and two losses while he was dinged up at regionals."

In 4A, Creekview received a second-place finish from Jorge Santos (106), third from Isaac Salinas (152) and fifth from Tanner Jones (138), while The Colony's Dominick Thornhill won silver (182) and Colton Stowe took bronze (132).

On the girls side, Creekview's Leah Olguin placed sixth (119).

Heiley Garcia led the girls effort for R.L. Turner in 5A by winning gold at 138, while Enya Hernandez (102) picked up fourth just in front of Lewisville's Tommi Goodman in fifth.

Coppell's Cara Romeike (119) also earned fifth.
