12-5A BASEBALLWEEKEND ROUNDUP: MISD teams impress at host tournament
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
There were some rude hosts at the Mesquite ISD Crumpton Invitational this past week.
Horn, North Mesquite and Mesquite combined to post a 9-3 record at the event, giving them a boost going into the start of 12-5A play on Tuesday.
The Jaguars made the most noise, posting a perfect 4-0 record and allowing just six runs in those games.
On Friday, it was Mason Jordan who did the job on the mound as the Jaguars limited The Colony to just three hits in a 5-0 win.
Horn's Clayton Youngman held the Duncanville bats quiet in a 6-3 victory on Thursday. Later in the day, Jared Thompson and Brett Harryman doubled to lead a 14-attack as the Jaguars rolled over Bryan Adams, 14-2. Michael Floyd was the beneficiary of the offense, as he earned the win on the mound.
North Mesquite bounced back from an opening 15-2 loss to Royse City by reeling off three straight wins to close out the Crumpton Invitational.
The Stallions won a pair of games on Friday, with Cameron Henderson helping them limit Bryan Adams to just two hits in a 10-1 victory. Later in the day, Henderson tripled, Hunter Jenkins had a pair of doubles and Tyler Starks added a two-bagger in a 6-2 win over South Garland. Trevor Weldon got the victory on the hill.
North Mesquite then pushed its season record to 4-5 on Saturday, as Starks held Greenville to just a pair of runs in a 7-2 victory.
Mesquite split its four games at the tournament, closing on a sour note with a 6-4 loss to Berkner. The Skeeters got a triple from Rodney Jackson, but it was one of just four hits, and they also hurt themselves with five errors.
Mesquite blasted Seagoville on Friday in a 21-0 rout. Trey Leblanc threw a no-hitter and he got plenty of support, as Grant French belted a home run and Julian Rios and Anthony Aldrich doubled as part of a 16-hit attack.
On Thursday, he Skeeters got a triple from Daniel Ferra in a 6-3 win over Frisco Heritage and Carlos Chavez doubled to help a strong pitching performance by French in a 5-1 victory over Ennis.
Mesquite will host undefeated Longview on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Tillery Field in the district opener for both teams. Horn will hit the road to play at Tyler Lee while North Mesquite will play at Rockwall-Heath.
