The Frisco boys wrestling team made school history at last weekend’s Class 4A state wrestling meet in Austin.
The Raccoons ended the weekend with a silver medal in the boys team standings, giving Frisco its highest-ever finish at the state meet.
“Going into the tournament, I thought if we wrestled a perfect tournament that we’d be in the top three,” said Chuck Brown, Frisco head coach. “We dang near won the whole thing.”
“We did excellent,” Brown said. “I was very pleased with how we wrestled.”
Leading the way for the Raccoons were gold-medal finishers Sam Brown (145), Chuck Brown’s son, and Shane Roberson (285). Roberson capped his season with a 9-3 victory against Lancaster’s Harvey James to improve to 39-0 on the year.
“[Roberson] came out of football and wasn’t even sure if he’d wrestle this year,” coach Brown said. “It’s a good thing he did. He dominated throughout the whole meet.”
Brown took on Canyon Randall’s Chris Thompson and earned a 7-4 win to improve to 49-3.
“To have that father-son moment was something really special,” coach Brown said. [Sam Brown] wrestled a fantastic state tournament.”
The Lady Raccoons were led by Sandra Flores (165), who took home gold after a 4-0 victory against Mission Veterans Memorial’s Jackie Gonzalez, giving Flores a 38-6 mark on the year.
“[Flores] really dedicated herself in workouts,” coach Brown said. “Her work ethic was amazing.”
Joining Flores as a gold medal finisher from Frisco ISD was Liberty’s Amanda Allen (185), who defeated Azle’s Hannah McFarland in the finals.
“There were more state finalists in our district than any district [in 4A] in the state,” coach Brown said.
Allen helped the Lady Redhawks (72.5) claim fourth place in the final team standings, with Heritage (36) taking 14th and Centennial (13) finishing 29th in the meet.
While Frisco (88) led the way on the boys side, Wakeland (60) earned seventh place to round out the top-10 finishers from Frisco ISD. Lone Star (20) came in 32nd while Heritage (7) finished 52nd in the meet.
