Second small hospital proposed for Coppell

Published: Tuesday, January 15, 2013 10:59 AM CST
By sometime in 2014, two small hospitals could potentially be in operation on the north side of State Highway 121 and Denton Tap Road in Coppell.

Last September, the Coppell City Council approved plans for Elite Care to build a one-story structure on the northeast corner of that intersection, near Whataburger and just south of Market Street. Work crews are presently installing infrastructure at that location, and construction is already under way.

Elite Care will occupy a 14,000-square-foot medical facility on about 1.8 acres of property.

Kaim Associates of Kingwood is the architecture for the project and Bleyl & Associates of Conroe is the engineer.

At a Jan. 8 meeting, the Coppell City Council voted to amend a concept plan to allow the development of a two-story hospital/medical/office building on the northwest corner of Denton Tap Road and State Highway 121.

Emerus Hospital Partners, based in The Woodlands, is proposing to build a 19,929-square-foot hospital, with an 18,986-square-foot medical office structure on top. Doctors offices and potentially Emerus administration offices would be on the second floor.

However, Dr. John Buck, Emerus president, said the proposal is not a “done deal.” He said the city council action on Jan. 8 was the first of several steps to be taken before the hospital can be constructed and placed into operation.

He said the city planning department will still have to approve several features, and there will also be state inspections, etc. before the hospital can be licensed to operate.

“However,” he added, “We are excited about the possibility of this facility opening, possibly sometime in 2014.”

Emerus presently has seven facilities in operation in the state, with three more in the planning.

One of those operations is in Aubrey, where Emerus has partnered with Baylor for the operation of the Baylor Emergency Medical Center at Aubrey.

Buck said Emerus will also seek to partner with Baylor for the Coppell facility, with the possibility that it could be named the Baylor Emergency Center at Coppell.

At the Jan. 8 city council meeting, one resident who lives near the proposed site said there had been concerns that a hospital at that location could cause unwanted noise by ambulance sirens and traffic.

However, Dudley Carpenter, Emerus vice president of real estate who spoke at the meeting and answered questions, said the patients at the hospital would be “walk ins” and would not be brought to the hospital by ambulances. He said in some cases, a private ambulance service might be called to transport the patient from the Coppell hospital to another hospital.
