It's official: Garland ISD trustees name Morrison superintendent

The wait is over.

Following a mandated 21-day period, the Garland ISD Board of Trustees on Friday, Feb. 15, unanimously named Dr. Bob Morrison as superintendent of schools. On Jan. 24, the board chose Morrison as the lone finalist for the position during a specially called meeting.

Morrison will assume his new role on Monday.

The 24-year educator has served as superintendent of Mansfield ISD for four years; he also held leadership positions in the curriculum department for six years, according to a GISD news release.

When he comes to class on Feb. 25, he will do what every good student in the district does: listen and take notes. He will gather input from school staff, educators, students, business leaders and community members - "from Sachse, to Rowlett, to Garland - you know, the whole gamut," he said.

"You have to be able to listen before you start doing anything, so I take the time to listen, to see what everybody feels are the things that we're doing well in Garland, the things that they feel like maybe need some improvement, and we'll put together a strategy and try to move through it," he said.

While at Mansfield ISD, Morrison led plans such as the 1-on-1 iPad initiative for high school students and teachers, the MISD iPhone App launch, a districtwide strategic plan, and the development, construction, and completion of a 5,500-seat auditorium and teacher professional development center, according to GISD.

"This is my fourth year [as superintendent at MISD], but I've been in Mansfield for 10 years, so there was a lot of knowledge that went into those big decisions - as far as iPads or things like that," Morrison said. "Just because that was the kind of initiatives that Mansfield wanted doesn't mean it's an initiative that Garland wants.

"You kind of have to leave those things behind that you worked on, because every community's different - and then, after seeking a lot of input, then start putting together a plan," he said.

Morrison holds a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Phoenix and a master's degree in education from the University of Central Oklahoma, as well as a bachelor's degree of education in social science from Oklahoma Baptist University, according to MISD.

Morrison and his wife, a high school counselor and a former math teacher, have three children. The family will reside within one of the communities served by the district.
