Boys basketball: Hebron upends No. 1 DeSoto with comeback in Region I quarterfinals

FORT WORTH — DeSoto’s Terry Maston had game-highs of 27 points and 11 rebounds in Tuesday’s Region I quarterfinal against Hebron at the Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center.
One of his few mistakes was costly, however.
With a 50-39 advantage midway through the third, Maston followed a layup by Hebron’s Chase Mortenson with a technical foul; leading to what was a seven-point trip down the floor for the Hawks, which carried the momentum to a 62-55 victory over the state’s top-ranked team.
Facing its largest deficit of the game at 50-39, Hebron used a 12-0 run to take their first lead since 6-4 in the opening quarter and closed the game on a 23-5 run.
“We changed defenses quite a few times after [the technical foul],” Bishop said. “We went man to zone to man and tried some different things out. They weren’t hitting their shots as well. And [Maston] was killing us in the first half and they were all at the rim. We did a better job on him in the second half.”
Maston scored 18 of his 27 in the first half.
“I don’t think we understood how good their big guys were,” Bishop added. “Maybe that woke us up at halftime.”
Following Mortenson’s layup in the third, Ridge Shipley knocked down both technical free throws and delivered on a corner 3-pointer to bring Hebron within four at 50-46. Shipley finished with a team-high 26 points, including 16-of-18 from the charity stripe, three of which sealed the game in the final minute.
“He’s a star player,” Bishop said. “He’s kind of the head on the snake right here and is the guy that runs us. When he is on, he is tough to stop, but we had a lot of other guys step up too.”
Jeff Hicks contributed 13 points 5-of-8 shooting, including a corner three to open the fourth quarter and put the Hawks in front, 51-50. He also scored on layup in transition to give the Hawks a 3-point lead at 57-54 after Hebron saved a ball on the baseline that was heading out of bounds.
“Jeff has been making shots and play for us all year,” Bishop said. “He’ll go get a rebound at 5-foot-9 and sky up there with the big guys. It’s not surprising anything he does.”
Tyler Williams struggled to find his offensive game early but finished with eight points and four rebounds, including a tip-in to bring Hebron within two late in the third.
Williams also chipped a pair of fourth-quarter assists, but it was on the defensive end where shined the most, limiting Duke signee and McDonald’s All-American Matt Jones to four points on 1-of-7 from the field.
“Matt is a great player and we concentrated a lot on him,” Bishop said. “Tyler really stepped up. His defense was great; to limit a Duke signee to four points. That’s pretty great.”
Connor McClenaghan scored four of his six points consecutively in the fourth for Hebron to help the rally, while Mortenson finished with nine points.
The Eagles had previously defeated the Hawks in non-district play, 82-59.
“They beat us pretty good down in Houston,” Bishop said. “On Nov. 16, we had two losses and we haven’t lost since. Our guys have kind of learned to win over time. DeSoto is a great team, we just came out and tried to do our best and represent our school. We did that.”
