You say you want a Revolution: Arena franchise offering $1 tickets for opener

Published: Friday, February 15, 2013 1:53 PM CST
PLANO -- From the Dallas Sidekicks to the Allen Americans and the Texas Stampede to the Lone Star Conference Championships, the AEC has had plenty of sports tenants.

The newest one is making a push to ensure it is noticed by the potential fan base.

That team would be the Indoor Football League's Texas Revolution, which is offering $1 tickets (excluding Premier and VIP seating) to Thursday's season opener against the North Texas Crunch. The team produced several pictures of general manager and co-owner Tim Brown and attached them to dollar bills celebrating the promotion.

"According to the Hall of Fame, those dollars aren't worth too much," the Dallas native and former Oakland Raiders star said in response to being denied induction to the Hall again in 2013.

Brown, who won a Heisman Trophy at Notre Dame, is excited about the promotion.

"We want to fill the Allen Event Center for this game," he said. "I know that if fans give us a first look, they will want to come back to ensure the success of our team."

Fellow co-owner Tommy Benizio, who is also the president and CEO of the team, seconded those feelings.

"Every darn seat is going to be sold for that first game," he said. "We are going to be proud when that happens and we'll put on a show."

The opening-game $1 ticket promotion is an important one for the Revolution as they are replacing an Allen Wranglers franchise that went through two owners, multiple head coaches and struggled with poor attendance over the past two years despite signing former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens for the 2012 season.

The Revolution, however, have tried to distance themselves from the former regime with a new ownership group, a notable face of the franchise in Brown and new head coach Billy Back, who has experience winning championships at this level.

"This place is great," Back said. "Allen, Plano, McKinney, these are all incredible cities."

Back has also asked Brown about the potential of returning to the field with the Revolution.

"No, he has not been successful at convincing me to do that," Brown said.

"We've talked about practice," Back added with a smile. "We'll start with that first."

In addition to new coaches, returning fan favorites from the Wranglers like defensive back Frankie Solomon Jr. and a training camp roster that includes quarterback Nathan Dick, an Allen alum, the Revolution have a new sponsorship partner in CiCi's Pizza.

In addition to $1 tickets, the pizza chain will put forth a pre-game fireworks show and distribute free t-shirts to the first 1,000 fans at Thursday's game, which kicks off at 7 p.m.

"It's important to be involved in the community and with a good value," said Mike Shumsky, CiCi's Pizza CEO and an Allen resident. "And we feel the Texas Revolution represent both."
