23-4A GIRLS SOCCER: Poteet takes huge step with shootout win over Forney
Published: Wednesday, February 20, 2013 2:14 AM CST
Poteet did not move into first place with Tuesday's 2-1 shootout victory over Forney, but it might be only a matter of time.
The Pirates (3-0-1-0, 11 points) put the first blemish on the Jackrabbits' (4-0-0-1, 13 points) 23-4A ledger with the win, using a regulation goal from Kaylah Hunter and some pressure play in penalty kicks.
Poteet has played one less game than Forney, but with the Jackrabbits idle on Friday, the Pirates can move into sole possession of first with a victory.
That will be no easy task, though, against a West Mesquite team that continues to open eyes.
The Wranglers (3-1-0-0, nine points) continued their strong play of late with a 4-1 victory over Kaufman on Tuesday to remain firmly entrenched in the playoff picture.
Alexis Jordan, who only joined the team in the past week while playing basketball, had two goals and Alexandra Leiva and Sabrina Martinez added scores.
In addition to the head-to-head showdown, which will take place on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Mesquite Memorial Stadium, the Pirates will play Crandall while the Wranglers will have another tough challenge against Forney.
