SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Poteet rallies in late innings, Skeeters, Jags pick up victories

Published: Wednesday, February 20, 2013 3:50 PM CST
Poteet evened its record at 3-3 on Tuesday with a 4-3 victory over Prosper.

The Pirates trailed 3-0 after two innings, but rallied late. After pushing across one run in the top of the fifth, Poteet scored three times in the sixth, with Keairah Hanks driving home the go-ahead run.

That was all Madison Sadler would need. Sadler, who came on in relief, gave up no runs and struck out two in four innings of work to earn the victory.

Selena Mendoza had two hits and drove in a run while Cassie Vasquez also had a pair of base hits.

Poteet will join city mates Mesquite, Horn and North Mesquite, as well as Sachse and other teams from around the area at the Mesquite ISD Tournament on Thursday through Saturday.

The Skeeters (2-5) notched their second win of the season on Tuesday with a 20-0 thumping of Carrollton R.L. Turner. Lindy Kennedy and Lily Garza each tripled and Sara McGuire doubled as Mesquite pounded out 12 hits.

McGuire was the beneficiary of the scoring output, but she did not need much, as she tossed a two-hit shutout.

The Jaguars moved to 2-4 on the season with a 8-7 victory over Forney on Tuesday. Ashley Moore got the win on the mound, while Kelsea Fite had a triple to lead the offense.

The Stallions fell to 0-3 on Tuesday with a 15-1 loss to Duncanville. North Mesquite hurt itself with nine errors and the Panthers scored 11 runs in the third inning.

The Stallions had five hits, including a double by Tiara Mickens and a triple by Katelyn White, and Aurora Reyna drove in the team's lone run.

Rowlett was shut down by Lewisville, as Maribeth Gorsuch threw a shutout in a 5-0 victory. The Eagles are scheduled to complete in the Allen Tournament starting on Thursday.

West Mesquite, the only MISD team not staying at home for tournament play, will compete in the Scurry-Rosser Tournament this weekend. The Wranglers are coming off an 11-6 loss to Lakeview on Tuesday.
