Two more chances: Bobcats look for first district win of season

The Celina boys basketball team is still in search of its first district win of the season.
With two more chances before the regular season concludes, the Bobcats can now do so with added momentum after finding the win column against McKinney Christian in a 48-22 non-district shellacking on Friday.
“It was good for our kids to get a win,” said Dusty Hutson, Celina head coach.
“We played pretty well,” Hutson said. “Athletically, we just overmatched [McKinney Christian].”
With the Bobcats playing shorthanded at point guard, Brown has taken over as floor general and Hutson said the junior has excelled in his new role.
“Point guard isn’t [Brown’s] natural position,” he said. “He has done some really good things though.”
The victory snapped a nine-game losing streak and gave the Bobcats a chance at starting a winning streak with a Tuesday contest against Argyle. However, the Eagles proved to be too much and came away with a 75-41 home win.
“Our kids really battled,” Hutson said. “If you look at the score and weren’t at the game, you can’t get a feel for how the game went.”
Celina now has two more chances to claim its first win over a District 10-3A foe this season, with Friday’s 8 p.m. matchup against Carrollton Ranchview next in line.
“Our kids want to win,” Hutson said. “They’re excited about going to Ranchview.”
The two teams met in a Jan. 22 contest and went toe-to-toe until the final minutes, with Ranchview ultimately prevailing for a 68-56 victory.
If the Bobcats fail to earn their first district win during Friday’s game against Ranchview, Lone Star will represent the team’s final chance of the season. The Rangers were dominant in an 80-36 rout during a previous meeting between the two teams.
Celina enters the final two games of the season with a 6-13 mark and an 0-6 record against district counterparts. Although the Bobcats have been eliminated from postseason contention, Hutson said a win could still go a long ways for his young team.
“Even though we were eliminated from the playoffs, we still want to win,” he said. “This team always plays hard and wants to win.”
