Randle returns, Lions win

Sidelined by a foot injury since November, Prestonwood Christian Academy senior Julius Randle is back.

The Lions star forward returned in Friday's district finale against Bishop Lynch and the outcome, a 74-56 victory, was their most lopsided win in more than a month. Randle scored 19 as Prestonwood capped its TAPPS I-5A campaign at 5-7, winning four of its final six games.

Focus now shifts toward the postseason, where the Lions will play Friday in an area round matchup.

East eyes Florida football matchup

The Plano East football team may not have to worry about another double bye week after all.

The Panthers are in negotiations to host Venice (Fla.) for a non-district game, tentatively scheduled for Sept. 27 from Kimbrough Stadium.

A Class 7A school, Venice's football program dates back to 1951 and it captured a state title in 2000. Last year, the Indians went 9-4 and received votes just outside the top-10 in the Florida AP state rankings all season long. The matchup would be a boost for an East squad that failed to secure a 10th opponent last season and endured two consecutive byes after starting 4-0. Following the layoff, the Panthers went just 1-4 in District 10-5A.

An agreement to play is in place and a contract should be finalized in the coming days.

Pierce named Missouri Valley POW

Missouri State senior first baseman Stevie Pierce, a Plano Senior alum, was selected as the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week after a strong opening weekend at the Georgia Tech-Kennesaw State Invitational.

Pierce slugged three home runs, drove in eight runs, had 16 total bases and six two-out RBI, all tops among conference players. Pierce's three home runs last weekend tied her career high for a season, a figure she attained as a freshman and sophomore.

Pierce was also solid in the field, converting all 46 chances without committing an error.

Pierce was also tabbed the MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week.

Jones ranked No. 1 in North America

Plano native Seth Jones' march to become the first defenseman taken No. 1 in the NHL Entry Draft in seven years took another step Tuesday as he was named the No. 1 skater in North America in the 2013 midterm rankings by NHL Central Scouting.

Jones would be the first American-born player chosen No. 1 since Patrick Kane in 2007.

Jones plays for the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League.

Jones is fifth among first-year WHL players with 28 points in 33 games. He also has a plus-29 rating. Jones has piled up the points in the past month as the 6-foot-3, 208-pounder tallied six assists and a goal in helping the United States win gold at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship.

The race for No. 1 is between Jones and Nathan MacKinnon (Quebec Major Junior Hockey League).

Nike Hoop Summit selects Randle

Prestonwood Christian Academy senior Julius Randle has been selected for the Nike Hoop Summit on Apr. 20 in Portland, Ore.

"Julius was obviously selected based on his ability to play basketball, but more importantly based on his character," said Chris Mayberry, Prestonwood head coach. "He has kept such a positive attitude dealing with the adversity of his injury and will continue to be selected for honors and awards because of his character."

The Nike Hoop Summit is one of the premier high school basketball showcases, pitting the country's top seniors against a World Select Team.

Randle is no stranger to such competition, capturing a gold medal on Team USA at the 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championship last summer.

Ringo heads up masters clinic

Plano East head football coach Johnny Ringo will be the clinic coordinator Feb. 20-21 when the Texas Football Masters Clinic comes to the DoubleTree Galleria.

Ringo is also president of the Texas High School Coaches Association.

The clinic, which runs 4-6 p.m. both days, will focus on advanced schemes and techniques from top coaches across the state.

Fans in the Stands

The Plano West-Plano Senior boys soccer game is usually a notable happening on the sports calendar, but the Wildcats are trying to up the ante in 2013 with their "Fans in the Stands" campaign.

The game is 7:30 p.m. Feb. 22 at Clark Stadium.

As host team, the six-time Class 5A State Champions hope to draw 2,013 fans to the match and create a party atmosphere with halftime youth soccer, cheerleaders and drummers in the stands.

Planoite among Fan Cave finalists

Plano West alum Mina Park is among the 52 finalists for the MLB Fan Cave 2013 competition.

Park is representing the Texas Rangers, with a chance at moving to New York to watch every baseball game of the upcoming season while blogging, interviewing players and making creative videos. The competition's top 30 finalists are selected through fan voting, the original audition submission and ability to generate media buzz. Each finalist will be flown out to spring training in Arizona later this month.

Anderson picks up first offer

With the 2013 Signing Day class squared away, activity is already heating up for 2014.

The latest to garner interest is Plano West junior running back Auston Anderson, who received his first offer Wednesday when Northwestern came calling.

The interest in Anderson makes sense.

In his second varsity season, the 5-foot-8, 175-pounder was a first team all-district and all-Collin County selection after rushing for 1,156 yards and 13 touchdowns. Anderson, who also runs track, was the lighting part of the Wolves' multi-tiered rushing attack in 2012 as the team advanced to the regional finals for the first time in program history.

West already has one Class of 2014 commit as linebacker Lance Cottrell recently pledged to SMU.
