Sunnyvale streaking: Raider boys bring nine-game winning streak into playoffs
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
Sunnyvale already knew it was headed to the boys basketball playoffs no matter the outcome of Tuesday's regular season finale against Pilot Point.
But the last thing the Raiders wanted to do was lose any of the momentum that they had built up during the course of the last month.
Sunnyvale refused to let up, opening a big first-half lead and cruising to a 58-47 victory on Tuesday.
Sunnyvale's Thomas Wendt was feeling it against Pilot Point. The senior knocked down 10 of his 12 shots on his way to a game-high 21 points.
Stephen Kirven added 14 points as the Raiders used a 21-8 spurt in the second quarter to take a 34-15 lead and were never seriously threatened from that point.
Sunnyvale had a quartet of players score in double figures in Friday's 76-66 victory over Caddo Mills.
The Raiders led only 34-30 at halftime and while they were never able to run away from Caddo Mills, they were able to make that advantage hold up until the end.
Wendt had a game-high 26 points for Sunnyvale, but he got plenty of help. Kirvin scored 14 points, Lawson Ayo added 14 and Mohammed Hamideh chipped in with 10.
Prior to Sunnyvale's playoff opener, it will play a warm-up game against Kaufman on Friday at 6 p.m. at Sunnyvale High School.
