Pirate boys out to reclaim district's top spot

Published: Thursday, January 17, 2013 8:43 PM CST
Poteet enjoyed a successful 2012 season by most teams' standards, but one piece of hardware was missing.

For the first time in five years, the Pirates did not bring home the district championship, instead settling for second behind crosstown rival West Mesquite.

This season, Poteet is not only looking to bring back the 23-4A crown, but also win a postseason game for the first time in four years.

The Pirates bring back a wealth of experience and talent to a team that went 16-8-2 last season, but even with that winning background, they are looking to build confidence early on.

"My main focus is to identify our weaknesses, improve upon them and stay healthy; all while winning games and experiencing success," Poteet head coach Colby Peek said.

The Pirates are well on their way to building momentum, having posted a 4-0-1 record through the first week of the season.

Among the leaders for Poteet is senior captain Charles Ojeda, who has committed to Oauchita Baptist University. The forward and three-year starter accounted for 20 goals and 14 assists last season on his way to district offensive player of the year honors.

In addition to Ojeda, the Pirates will get scoring punch from forward Carlos Cardenas, another senior captain and three-year starter, who had nine goals and eight assists last season, as well as senior captain Ruben Gonzalez, a midfielder who had seven goals and three assists a year ago, and midfielder Trent Wisdom, who had three goals and seven assists and was named utility player of the year.

After winning co-newcomer of the year honors as a freshman last year, Josh Sedano is back to anchor the defense, while Trevor Gilbert, a first-team, all-district selection, is a three-year starter at goalkeeper.

As an added bonus, Poteet will add to the rotation Sammy Duarte, a midfielder who would have started last season but opted to play on an academy team.

The Pirates will continue their non-district slate at Frisco Heritage on Friday and then remain on the road at Sulphur Springs on Tuesday.

The real season begins with the start of 23-4A play on Feb. 5, as Poteet tries to not only regain the district crown, but also build momentum toward what they hope is the second trip to the state tournament in school history (2009).

"Our goals are to be undefeated district champions, (which is) a lofty goal with West Mesquite in our district," Peek said. "And to win region and go to the state tournament."
