Mesquite Rotary Club president Debi Holley presented a $10,000 donation check at their meeting on Jan. 29 to assist in the fundraising effort to construct the Mesquite 9/11 Memorial Project on grounds located at the Mesquite Arts Center. Mesquite Fire Chief Mark Kerby and Fire Captain Kelly Turner accepted the donation on behalf of the city’s project development committee
The Mesquite 9/11 Project’s centerpiece will be the large, twisted steel beam from the ruins of the World Trade Center in New York that the city received in 2011 from the New York Port Authority. The purpose of the project will be to honor those who lost their lives in the attack on September 11, 2001, and to honor those who are still fighting for our freedom. The beam will rest on a large pedestal in the middle of a beautifully designed and landscaped area adjacent to the Arts Center.
Mesquite Rotary president Debi Holley noted that the funds which allow the club to make this donation come from the proceeds of their past Mesquite Rotary Bike Ride fundraisers. The group is already preparing for this year’s ride, which will be held at Mesquite Rodeo Convention Center on Saturday, June 1.
The Mesquite Rotary Club was established in 1959, and meets at noon each Tuesday at the Dallas Athletic Club.
