McKinney ISD Senior Tour returns Feb. 5
File photo - Former McKinney Boyd High School senior Megan Schmalz, far right, explains some of Boyd's courses to MISD Senior Tour participants during last year's tour. This year's tour, open to residents 55 and older, is Tuesday, Feb. 5.
With their days at school in the distant past, McKinney senior citizens can return to classrooms and locker-filled hallways during the third annual MISD Senior Tour.
The free tour, coordinated by McKinney ISD Partners in Education, will run 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5. It will include a tour at various campuses, student entertainment and a closer look into today's academics.
Participants, who must be 55 and older, load onto a school bus that takes them to the campuses. During last year's tour, they visited McKinney Boyd High School, Faubion Middle School and Webb Elementary - to be greeted, guided and entertained at each location.
Student tour guides highlight what makes their place of learning special, pointing out its newest technology, available classes and the latest resources. Though likely a far cry from participants' earlier education experience, many have or recently had grandchildren attending local schools.
"I was tickled to find out they're teaching Chinese," said Jeannine Sellmeyer, a Lucas resident, during last year's walkthrough at Boyd. "This gives a whole cross-section, telling about all of the activities that they have. They didn't have these even when my kids graduated."
Participants will again receive a Senior Tour t-shirt and other items, and a mid-tour lunch will be provided. Space is limited, so McKinney ISD Partners in Education encourages those interested to sign up right away by contacting Nancy Cowlishaw at 469-302-4108, or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
