12-5A BOYS BASKETBALL: North Mesquite suffers through rough night

It would be hard to draw up a more difficult night for North Mesquite to endure on Friday.
The Stallions, fighting for their playoff lives, did all they could for three quarters against second-place Longview only to have the Lobos rally and hit a game-winner with seconds remaining for a 49-48 victory.
To make matters worse, out in East Texas, the team North Mesquite was chasing, Tyler Lee, was able to post a 65-56 victory over Horn.
Mike Williams had 19 points and Drick Whitted had eight for the Stallions in a losing effort on Friday.
Horn got 28 points but no other player scored in double figures in the loss to Tyler Lee. The Jaguars fell into a 12-point hole early on but were able to claw back to within 31-26 at halftime.
The Red Raiders regained the momentum in the second half, though, and were able to steadily pull away.
Not to be lost in what was going on in the middle of the standings, Mesquite took care of business against last-place Rockwall in a 69-51 victory to move to 8-1 in district play.
The Skeetes trailed early but went on a 26-12 run in the second quarter and they were in control the rest of the way.
Alex Cooper and Davion Keys did most of the damage offensively with 24 and 20 points, respectively.
Aaron Maxwell had 17 points and Skylar Simmons scored 14 for the Yellow Jackets, who fell to 0-9.
