Tuesday, Eric Curl, 14, of Flower Mound and Matthew Draeger, 15, of Paris were named Texas' top youth volunteers of 2013 by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a national program honoring middle level and high school students for outstanding volunteer service.

As state honorees, Curl and Draeger each will receive $1,000, engraved silver medallions and all-expense-paid trips to Washington, D.C., where they will join 100 other top youth volunteers from across the United States for four days of national recognition events.

The program also recognized 10 Distinguished Finalists from Texas:

- Madison Albrecht, 16, of Boerne

- Chandler Burke, 18, of Dallas

- Kelly Burnett, 17, of Texarkana

- Athena Chen, 16, of Carrollton

- Kaitlyn Dehaven, 18, of Canyon Lake

- Kylie Fichter, 17, of Houston

- Jordan Hayley, 15, of Houston

- Joella Methola, 12, of El Paso

- Lisa Michaels, 17, of Plano

- Keren Moyal, 18, of Dallas

The distinguished finalists each will receive engraved bronze medallions.

Draeger, Texas' high school state honoree, was honored for leading a student team that has secured donations of nearly 20,000 household and personal items – including furniture, clothing, bedding and toiletries – and distributed them to needy families in his area. Curl, Texas' middle level state honoree, was honored for purchasing and collecting supplies that are needed, but not always available, for wounded soldiers in Afghanistan.
