Tierney announces council candidacy

Published: Friday, February 1, 2013 2:22 PM CST
On the first day of the official filing period, former councilman Greg Tierney filed for Place 4 on the Lewisville City Council.

"I've missed serving on the city council, and I've missed serving the citizens of Lewisville. I've always enjoyed it. The majority of the Lewisville City Council is moving our city in the right direction, and I have the experience, knowledge of city business and the drive to keep us moving forward," Tierney said. "In the two years that I have been off council, I have kept my pulse on our community. I have experienced tremendous personal growth while working hard to build up my Old Town business."

Tierney is the owner and manager of Tierney's Café and Tavern in Old Town Lewisville. He currently serves on the board of the Lewisville Area Chamber of Commerce and served as president of the Old Town Business Association. He is also the founder of the Old Town Preservation Society and has served on the Housing Board for Christian Community Action.

"I have always been a firm believer in giving back to the community. I made the choice years ago to live and build my business in Lewisville," Tierney said. "I have a passion for Old Town and the city at large, and proved over my ten years on council that I am an effective representative for all of Lewisville."

While on the city council, Tierney served as mayor pro tem and deputy mayor pro tem. He resigned from the council in February 2011 after being arrested for DWI.

"I think it was best for the city at that time for the city to continue moving in the right direction. I didn't want to be any type of distraction to what was truly important," Tierney said. "I made a mistake and paid the price. I learned my lesson, and I believe I'm a better stronger person now because of it. I'm ready to move on."

Tierney said the number one issue he would like to address is revitalizing some of the older retail developments in the city.

"We're losing a lot of tax revenue and business to our neighboring city, for example, the Shops at Highland Village. That's where people are going," Tierney said. "A lot of our retail needs to be reinvigorated. I believe the city can meet with the private owners and partner with them to stimulate more tax base and retail development."

Tierney said the Interstate 35E corridor project is another issue that Lewisville will need to work on.

"The I-35 corridor is a huge, huge thing because it's an opportunity for us to recreate our image for the thousands and thousands of people driving on I-35," Tierney said. "We can reestablish Lewisville as a premier city in DFW."

Tierney said while the city has made a lot of progress on revitalizing Old Town, the efforts must continue. He also said quality of life for residents must continue to be a focus, and the city must continue improving and maintaining the parks and leisure services. He said Lewisville also needs to continue to support public safety.

Tierney is running against incumbent John Gorena.

"If I thought that the seat was being filled by somebody doing a good job, I wouldn't run. I have served with Mr. Gorena in the past. I like John but feel that he often seeks to impose an unrealistic ideology on city business that does not work on a pragmatic level and can be counter-productive," Tierney said. "I will, as I have in the past, bring an independent voice to the council that will contribute in a positive way as we move our city forward."

Tierney said he has more experience than Gorena. He said he understands how to properly and adequately work with other council members, staff members and other agencies that the city council has to work with to get things to happen.

"John is a nice guy, but I think he has an unrealistic view as to how a city should be operated," Tierney said. "I look forward to a positive, spirited race that will focus on the issues and challenges that confront our city. I have no doubt that our citizens will recognize the added value that I will bring to city council."

The Lewisville City Council election will be held on May 11.
