Girls basketball: Marcus tops Flower Mound to split season series

Published: Friday, February 1, 2013 11:08 PM CST
FLOWER MOUND — Hopes of an undefeated District 5-5A season for Flower Mound’s girls basketball team were dashed Friday as the Lady Jaguars came up short at home in a contest against Marcus, 63-51.

The Lady Marauders, who were paced by 16 points from Vanessa Jones, never trailed in the contest and scored the game’s first 10 points.

The win gives Marcus (7-2) an outside shot at claiming a share of the district title as they trail Flower Mound (8-1) by one game with one remaining.

The Lady Jaguars conclude the regular season at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Denton Ryan (6-3), while the Lady Marauders wrap up district at the same time and date against Hebron (2-7).

“We talked about momentum,” said Fred Jones, Marcus head coach. “We’ve gained some the last two games and they had a team meeting and talked about how we wanted to finish the season. I think tonight was the best team effort we’ve had all season.”

Alex Lapeyrolerie chipped in 14 points for Marcus, while Sierra Bone scored 13.

Flower Mound’s attack was led by Ashley Deary, who scored 21 points and set the program’s all-time scoring mark. Deary entered the contest tied with Laura McCoy (2007-10) for the record.

“It’s a great honor for her and all the hard work she’s put in over the past four years,” said Sherika Nelson, Flower Mound head coach. “She’s been a great leader for us and is going to hold those records for a few years. Her intensity on both ends changes us. I’m glad she’s leaving with that record. She deserves it.”

Marcus grabbed the early margin in part because of its defense, which forced Flower Mound to miss its first 12 field goal attempts.

“We wanted to protect the paint,” Jones said. “They have two phenomenal players (Deary and Cox) and we needed to keep them out of the paint and make them take difficult shots. I thought we did that early and it worked out.”

The Lady Jaguars pulled to within five midway through the second quarter but never got any closer.

“We didn’t play defense well enough,” Nelson said. “Marcus shot the ball well, made plays and hit big shots. We didn’t play well enough on defense to make up for not shooting the ball particularly well.

“To be honest with you, we haven’t played from behind a whole lot. If we can learn from that, it’s a valuable lesson.”

Now both squads gear up for their finales and respective postseasons.

“Denton Ryan’s going to be tough at their place,” Nelson said. “It’s going to be a tough environment and there’s going to be even more pressure to finish it out. We have to rebound from adversity and see what we’re made of.”
