YEAR IN REVIEW No. 7: Mustang girls soccer team narrowly misses out on state tourney berth

After making it to the regional semifinals during the 2011 season, Sachse set its sights on a return trip in the spring.
But the Mustangs were somewhat overshadowed for much of the season.
Sachse just happened to be playing in the same district as defending state champion McKinney Boyd, who was the No. 1 team in the nation in some polls, as well as rival Rowlett, who knocked off the Broncos to earn a share of the district championshp.
But the Mustangs put their 10-4 district record behind them when the playoffs started in pursuit of their own dreams.
Sachse got off to a good start with a 2-0 win over Skyline and then edged Belton in a shootout, 3-2.
That gave the Mustangs a third crack at Rowlett, who had won both meetings during the district season.
This time, it was Sachse's turn to shine, as they were able to turn the tables on the Eagles in a 2-0 victory to advance back to the regional tournament.
The Mustangs took their journey a step further than the previous year, getting goals from Kiana Clem and Jade Abarca in a 2-1 victory over Georgetown in the regional semifinals.
But they could not grab that elusive first trip to the state tournamnet, as Klein Oak edged them, 1-0, in the regional championship game.
