Valley Ridge second-graders make real world connection
From staff reports
Economics can be a hard concept for elementary students to understand, but Valley Ridge Elementary came up with a creative way to help students understand some complex concepts.
In December, all Valley Ridge second-grade classes combined their economic unit with a community service project that benefited local children. The activity taught students three important lessons: budget, community partnership and giving.
First, they learned the roles of producers and consumers, how work provides income to purchase goods and the importance of working within a budget to make purchases. Then, students made a real-world connection as they assumed the role of consumers to practice what they learned about budgets and purchase toys for children in the Lewisville area. The classes proudly partnered with the Lewisville Fire Department to distribute the toys where they were needed most.
