Northeast Dallas County Basketball Playoffs Picture

Published: Thursday, January 31, 2013 2:31 PM CST
As the regular season winds down, some area basketball teams have already secured their spot in the playoffs, while many others are still battling it out.

Here is a quick look at the postseason races in Northeast Dallas County.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

11-5A

In: Rowlett (9-1), Naaman Forest (8-2), Lakeview (8-3), Sachse (6-4)

Notes: With two games left in the regular season, the four playoff spots in 11-5A have been filled. But there is still plenty on the line in terms of seeding, especially with Rowlett's loss to Naaman Forest on Tuesday.

The good news for the Eagles is they still control their own destiny. They will clinch at least a share of the 11-5A crown by defeating winless North Garland on Friday and will secure the outright title and top seed in the playoffs with a victory over Lakeview on Tuesday.

Naaman Forest is the only other team that can catch the Eagles, but they need a Rowlett loss and two wins of their own, which will be tough with a season-ending game against Sachse on Tuesday.

The Mustangs are currently the fourth seed, but they still have a chance to move up. If they win their final two games, and Lakeview falls to Rowlett, it will create a tie for third place.

12-5A

In: Horn (9-1), Mesquite (9-2), Rockwall (8-2), Longview (5-5)

Notes: Horn is one win away from a share of the district title and two victories away from winning it outright.

The winner of Friday's game between Mesquite and Rockwall will likely be the second seed and would keep its chances of a 12-5A crown alive if the Jaguars should slip up.

Longview's victory over Tyler Lee on Tuesday clinched the fourth seed in the playoffs.

10-4A

In: Carrollton Newman Smith (12-0), Highland Park (10-2), West Mesquite (9-3)

In the hunt: Carrollton Creekview (6-6), North Forney (4-8)

Notes: Newman Smith has clinched a share of the district title and will be the No. 1 seed in the playoffs with one win in its last two games. Highland Park still has an outside shot at a share of the 10-4A championship if they win their final two games, including over Newman Smith on Friday, and the Trojans falter in the season finale against Forney.

West Mesquite can still tie for second if it wins its final two games and Highland Park loses one. The teams split the head-to-head series, meaning a play-in game for the second seed is a possibility.

North Forney stayed alive for another day with its win over Forney, but it will need the upset of the season on Friday as it roots for winless Terrell to defeat Creekview. If the Mustangs win, they are in. If they lose and North Forney wins, those two teams will meet in the season fianle.

12-2A

In: Gunter (10-0), Sunnyvale (9-2)

In the hunt: Leonard (6-4), Farmersville (4-6)

Notes: Barring a complete collaspe, Gunter will be the district champion and top seed in the playoffs, with Sunnyvale the second seed.

After being on the ropes just a few days ago, Leonard needs just one win in its final two games to clinch the third playoff spot. Farmersville needs two victories and two Leonard losses to force a tie for third place and a play-in game.

BOYS BASKETBALL

11-5A

In: Lakeview (9-0), Rowlett (8-1)

In the hunt: Naaman Forest (5-4), Sachse (4-4), Garland (2-6), South Garland (2-7)

Notes: Lakeview and Rowlett are almost assured of the top two seeds. The Patriots will clinch a share of the 11-5A title and the No. 1 seed in the playoffs with a win over the Eagles on Tuesday.

While it would not be official just yet, Naaman Forest and Sachse can all but wrap up playoff berths if they defeat Garland and South Garland, respectively, on Friday.

If the Owls or Colonels, or both, can win, the race for the final two spots will come down to the wire.

12-5A

In: Mesquite (8-1)

In the hunt: Longview (7-2), Horn (6-2), Tyler Lee (5-4), North Mesquite (3-5), Rockwall-Heath (1-7)

Notes: Longview will clinch with a win over North Mesquite on Friday. If that happens, Horn would also be in with a victory over Tyler Lee.

The Stallions trail the Red Raiders by a game-and-a-half for fourth place, but they do have an extra game to play. North Mesquite needs to stay within a game of Tyler Lee so that their head-to-head meeting on Feb. 12, the final day of the regular season, means something.

10-4A

In: None

In the hunt: Carrollton Newman Smith (9-1), West Mesquite (7-3), Highland Park (7-3), North Forney (6-4), Poteet (6-4)

Notes: Newman Smith not only clinches a playoff berth with a win on Friday against Highland Park, it would move to within another victory over a share of the 10-4A championship.

With West Mesquite, Highland Park, North Forney and Poteet all separated by just a game, all those teams can finish as high as second or as low as fifth and out of the playoffs. North Forney and Poteet, currently tied for the fourth and final postseason spot, play a pivotal game on Friday with the winner gaining a huge advantage going into the final three games of the year.

12-2A

In: Farmersville (8-1)

In the hunt: Sunnyvale (7-2), Leonard (6-3), Gunter (4-3)

Notes: Farmersville controls its own destiny for the top seed and the first-round bye in the playoffs. Sunnyvale's win over Leonard on Tuesday moved them into sole possession of second place.

Gunter is the only other team that can crack the top three and they will have a chance to prove they belong with games against Sunnyvale, Leonard and Farmersville to close the season.
