10-4A BOYS BASKETBALL: Pirates top Terrell to set up showdown for fourth
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
On a night when the battle between the top two teams in 10-4A earned much of the attention, Poteet and North Forney were each focused on their respective tasks at hand.
The two teams entered Tuesday tied for the fourth and final playoff spot, and with a head-to-head match-up looming on Friday, neither could afford a hiccup.
The Pirates (6-4) and Falcons can now look ahead, as each took care of business on Tuesday to set up a clash for fourth place on Friday at Poteet High School.
Poteet used a dominant stretch during the middle of the game to pull away from Terrell in a 59-43 victory. The Pirates were a little sluggish from the start, but got going with a 15-3 run to take control.
They would go on to outscore the Tigers 39-14 in the second and third quarters and that allowed them to coast to the end.
Raffaele Gaines had 12 points, Dimitrious Evans scored 11 and Chris Murphy added 10 for Poteet.
Although no team has officially clinched a postseason spot, Carrollton Creekview and Forney were officially eliminated, leaving five spots for four teams.
Newman Smith has a two-game lead for first place and will clinch a playoff spot on Friday if it can win a tough game at Highland Park.
West Mesquite will try to rebound on that same night against Forney.
The Wranglers and Pirates will then meet for the second time this season on Tuesday at West Mesquite.
FRIDAY
Just three days after suffering tough losses, both West Mesquite and Poteet picked up key wins on Friday in 10-4A play.
The Wranglers downed Highland Park, 61-52.
The Wranglers took it to the Scots from the opening tip, doubling them up, 18-9, in the opening quarter and then using a 13-5 run to take a commanding 33-14 lead at halftime.
Highland Park, who slipped back into third place with the loss, made a small run in the fourth quarter but it was not enough.
Poteet, meanwhile, moved back into a tie for the fourth and final playoff berth with a 52-45 victory over Carrollton Creekview on Friday.
The Pirates held the Mustangs to just six points in the opening quarter and had a 34-24 lead through three periods. Murphy had 19 points and Raffaele Gaines added 12 for Poteet. Alex Rincon had 17 points to lead Creekview, which saw its playoff hopes take a big hit as it fell to 3-6.
