Strong start: North girls soccer rolling along

While some other area teams may be dealing with a slew of serious early-season injuries and losses, all things considered, McKinney North girls soccer head coach Lance Lovell says his team is doing just fine.

"I think we're doing pretty well," Lovell said. "So far so good. We're battling through a few nagging injuries right now, but nothing major."

The Lady Bulldogs (6-1-3) are off to a hot start with only one loss in their first 10 games, dropping a 2-0 contest Tuesday night to their cross-town rival, the McKinney Lionettes.

BOYS SOCCER: Poteet claims championship at the Skeeter Cup

Published: Saturday, January 26, 2013 7:59 PM CST
With the start of district play just over a week away, Poteet showed this weekend why it is one of the favorites in the 23-4A race.

The Pirates rolled through three games, outscoring their opponents by a combined score of 12-1, to win the Skeeter Cup on Saturday.

Poteet, who is 7-0-3 overall, put the finishing touches on its run with a 3-0 victory over North Mesquite in the championship game.

The Pirates got goals from Carlos Cardenas, Sammy Duarte and Dakota Pearson and a shutout effort in the net from Trevor Gilbert.

It was the second consecutive shutout for Gilbert, as he earned tournament defensive most valuable player honors.

Charles Ojeda was tabbed as the offensive MVP after tallying three goals and two assists in the first two rounds.

The senior scored twice and Poteet got additional goal from Cardenas and Jesus Armendariz in a 4-0 semifinal win over Mesquite on Friday.

In the tournament opener, Cardenas netted a hat track and added a pair of assists, Ojeda scored once and had two assists and Duarte rounded out the scoring in a 5-1 win over Woodrow Wilson. Eleno Santillan scored for Woodrow Wilson, but it would prove to be the only goal the Pirates would allow in the tournament.

North Mesquite (5-4-0) had to settle for a runner-up finish. The Stallions had edged West Mesquite, 1-0, in penalty kicks in the semifinals on Friday and had opened the event with a 2-1 win over Red Oak on Thursday.

Gustavo Rosas and Abraham Vazques took care of the scoring, with an assist from Julio Gomez. Edgar Trejo scored for Red Oak but it was not enough.

West Mesquite (8-4-0) claimed third place after knocking off Mesquite in a 4-2 victory on Saturday. After being shutout in the semifinals, the Wranglers got their offense back on track, as Isai Velasquez had a hat trick and Daniel Rodriguez added another score.

Mesquite (3-5-2) got two goals from Melvin Gutierrez, but it could not quite keep pace.

Both West Mesquite and Mesquite had won their opening-round games.

The Wranglers used a pair of goals from Omar Loera and assists from Velasquez and Javier Garcis in a 2-0 win over Wylie.

The Skeeters got two goals from Walter Cavazos and a third from Richard Anyahegbu in a 3-1 victory against Seagoville.

In the consolation championship, Red Oak's Jerehmia Garcia scored twice and Andy Santoyo tacked on an additional score in a 3-0 win over Woodrow Wilson.

HORN

Horn was the lone Mesquite ISD team to not participate in the Skeeter Cup. The Jaguars opted for a non-district game on Friday in which they battled Lake Highlands to a 1-1 tie.

Horn, which is now 4-2-3, got the lone score of the game from Taylor Lewis.
