Gas line cut near McKinney square forces evacuations (UPDATE)

A gas line was cut Wednesday morning leading to the evacuation of nearby homes and businesses close to downtown McKinney.
First responders received a call around 10 a.m. notifying them that the line was cut near the intersection of Lamar Street and Kentucky Street. Stacie Durham of the McKinney Fire Department said a construction crew hit the four-inch line with a backhoe.
A few homes and businesses in the 500 block of N. Kentucky St. were evacuated as a safety precaution.
"People were advised to go downtown to the square if they had nowhere else to go," Durham said. "Because the gas was traveling north, we wanted them to go south, away from it."
An Atmos Energy crew quickly arrived on scene to repair the line. Evacuees were allowed back in their homes and places of business around 12 p.m., Durham said.
A construction crew building a youth center for First United Methodist Church near the intersection was responsible for cutting the line, she said.
An Atmos Energy official said repairs to the line were complete around 1:30 p.m.
