Sunnyvale basketball teams get ready for stretch run
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
The calendar has turned to a new year and that means that both the Sunnyvale girls and boys basketball teams are preparing for the stretch run in the race for the playoffs.
The Raider girls, the two-time defending district champions, have picked up where they left off during the last two years.
Sunnyvale improved to 18-4 overall and 5-0 in 13-2A with a pair of victories last week.
Sunnyvale got a good test on its day off from district play.
After taking an early lead, the Raiders found themselves victimized by a 13-5 run in the second quarter that left them in a 20-17 halftime hole.
Sunnyvale came back in the third quarter, using a 16-8 spurt of its own to regain the advantage and it then held off a late Princeton charge to secure the win.
Grace Goodhart had 17 points, Sheridan Lewis added 11 and Caila Sims chipped in with nine to take care of a majority of the scoring load.
The Raiders had been coming off another close game with a 43-40 victory over district rival Leonard on Friday.
Sunnyvale's best moments came in the first half, highlighted by a 15-3 run in the second quarter that seemingly put them in good shape with a 26-12 lead.
But Leonard refused to go away, cutting the deficit in half in the third quarter and then creeping even closer in the fourth.
But behind 13 points from Lewis and nine from Sims, Sunnyvale was able to hang on and keep its perfect district record intact.
Sunnyvale will host Gunter on Friday and Caddo Mills on Tuesday in 13-2A action.
The Raider boys are searching for their fourth consecutive playoff berth. Sunnyvale split its first two district games and had a bye on Tuesday.
Like the girls, the Raider boys will return to district action by hosting Gunter on Friday and Caddo Mills on Tuesday.
