The Lady Wolverines earned a 53-36 victory to improve to 5-3 against District 9-4A counterparts.

Sophomore Mariah Fluellen scored a game-high 14 points while junior Noel Hunt added 10 of her own to become the only two Lady Wolverines in double figures.

Winter Games of Texas near

For the eighth year in a row, The Winter Games of Texas (the state’s largest multi-sport amateur competition) is coming to Collin County.

The event is set to begin today.

Close to 4,000 athletes and 15,000 spectators, coaches, referees and volunteers are expected to participate in this year’s event, which features 13 different sports (basketball, Miracle League Bowling, fencing, figure skating, flag football, gymnastics, ice hockey, martial arts, soccer, swimming, volleyball, table tennis and the 2013 Texas State Weightlifting Championship, which is the latest addition to the annual slate of activities).

While most of the events are taking place in Frisco, the gymnastics portion of the competition will be tomorrow and Saturday at ASI Gymnastics-Plano West (4051 Rosemeade Pkwy).

Those who medal in basketball, figure skating, gymnastics, soccer, swimming and table tennis advance to the 2013 State Games of America, which are July 31-Aug. 4.

Buechele returns for fourth season

The Texas Rangers recently announced that former Rangers third baseman Steve Buechele will return for his fourth season as manager of the Double-A affiliate Frisco RoughRiders.

Buechele headlines a 2013 coaching staff that will remain completely intact from the previous season, with Jeff Andrews back as the team’s pitching coach and Jason Hart resuming his duties as hitting coach.

It will mark Buechele’s fifth as a Minor League manager after starting his coaching career in 2009 with the California League’s Bakersfield Blaze. Last year, the RoughRiders finished with an 80-60 record (second-best mark in the league) and an appearance in the Texas League Championship Series.

Buechele’s teams have made the playoffs in every season he has been a manager, while the former Ranger has tallied a 306-253 mark. On April 16 last year, Buechele passed Tim Ireland to become Frisco’s all-time winningest skipper with his 155th victory.

The RoughRiders begin the new season April 4 when Frisco visits the Arkansas Travelers. The team opens up its home slate April 11 when the Travelers come to Dr Pepper Ballpark for a 7 p.m. contest.

Hawkins commits to Bowling Green

The Texas Tornado, members of the 24-team North American Hockey League, recently announced forward Brandon Hawkins’ commitment to play hockey at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

The 18-year-old still has two years of junior hockey eligibility following the 2012-13 season but has taken the league by storm in his rookie year.

The forward currently leads the league in goals scored with 29 and is tied for third with 43 points.

“I liked the idea of Bowling Green more than I did a lot of other schools,” Hawkins said. “It’s a small-town school and I’m really comfortable with that type of feel.”

Hawkins joins CJ Reuschlein, who will play his college hockey at Army, as the only two Tornado players to make NCAA Division I commitments this season. Forward Brett Heikkila commited to Northern Michigan University before ever playing a game in a Tornado uniform.

Title game remains in Frisco through 2016

The NCAA announced Dec. 19 that it has agreed to a three-year extension with the city of Frisco to keep the Division I Football Championship title game at FC Dallas Stadium.

The venue has hosted the previous two FCS championship games and will do so until at least 2016.

This year’s game, featuring a rematch of the 2011-12 title game between North Dakota State and Sam Houston State, marks the second consecutive time it will be a sold-out FC Dallas Stadium, which holds more than 20,500 spectators.

At the end of the extension, Frisco will have hosted the title game six time, which is more than any other city other than Chattanooga, Tenn., which hosted the event during a 13-year span from 1997-2009.

Figueroa returns to cage

For the second straight year, West Plano Crossfit-trained mixed martial artist Edwin Figueroa will be on the UFC’s Super Bowl weekend card.

Figueroa returns to action for the first time in a year on Feb. 2 when he meets Francisco Rivera at UFC 156 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

A McKinney native, Figueroa competed just once in 2012 – a split-decision victory over Alex Caceres at UFC 143 during which Caceres was penalized two points for kicks to the groin. The points proved decisive in the decision, with the win upping Figueroa to 2-1 in the UFC and 9-1 overall.

Figueroa was scheduled to fight in June at UFC on FX 4 against Ken Stone but was forced out due to injury.
