Proposed school boundary maps released

Published: Friday, January 25, 2013 10:43 AM CST
Lewisville ISD on Thursday released the maps showing proposed re-drawn boundary lines for the elementary and middle schools in Flower Mound.

The maps are a result of work done by a committee composed of parents from each school in the Flower Mound High School feeder pattern.

This comes after a week of speculation and incorrect information about the proposals being posted on various websites.

The committee will host two community meetings -- 6:30 p.m. Feb. 6 at Forestwood Middle School and 6:30 p.m. Feb. 12 at McKamy Middle School -- to solicit resident feedback.

"The committee will reconvene after the community meetings and will take in the input," said Liz Haas, spokesperson for LISD. "So these could still change."

On Feb. 11, the LISD Board of Trustees will receive an update on the process. The board will have a discussion on the proposals in March and will likely vote on it in April.

The committee narrowed its choices down to two options after examining several boundary scenarios. The goal is to help alleviate the overcrowding at some schools and make better use of space at other campuses.

"The district likes to have buildings at 90 percent capacity or less," Haas said. "Wellington Elementary and Liberty Elementary are almost at capacity. Shadow Ridge Middle School and McKamy Middle School are also near capacity. Forestwood Middle School is one of the biggest middle schools in the district, and we're not at capacity there."

If approved, the new boundaries would go into effect in the 2013-14 school year. Incoming fifth- and eighth-grade students would be allowed to complete their final year at their current school, as well as siblings of those students.

Elementary school (Proposal 1)

Among the highlights of Proposal 1 is Donald Elementary School's zone stretching over FM 2499 into what is currently zoned for Old Settlers Elementary School. Old Settlers would then take over parts of Liberty Elementary and Wellington Elementary's zone. Wichita Trail would be the divider for Old Settlers. Currently, Old Settlers is divided between Shadow Ridge and McKamy Middle Schools. In this proposal, the new boundaries for Old Settlers would have the entire school continue on to McKamy.

Vickery Elementary is also impacted in this option. Currently, the majority of the Vickery student population is from the Lewisville High School feeder pattern, who continue on to Hedrick Middle School, and 96 students in the Flower Mound High School feeder pattern continue on to Forestwood Middle School. Proposal 1 would have the 96 students absorb into Forest Vista Elementary.

Elementary school (Proposal 2)

Proposal 2 focuses more on geographical boundaries and numbers than Proposal 1. The biggest difference is that Donald's zone would stretch farther across FM 2499 and take in more students from Old Settlers' current boundary and about the same number of students from Liberty and Wellington than Proposal 1 does. Old Settlers' western-most boundary would stop at High Meadow Road instead of extending farther west, compared to Proposal 1, thus keeping some students in Liberty's zone compared to Proposal 1. Vickery's zone would stay as it is now.

Middle school (Proposal 1)

Currently, Old Settlers' zone is split between Shadow Ridge and McKamy. Proposition 1 calls for all students from Old Settlers to go to McKamy. All of the Wellington students would attend Forestwood. Currently, McKamy takes all of Wellington.

Middle school (Proposal 2)

Garden Ridge Elementary students would attend Forestwood. Forestwood's zone would also stretch west of FM 2499 to Old Settlers Road and take the students that was a result of Donald's expansion.

Shadow Ridge's zone would extend farther west to Bayshore Drive, with the exception of an area located north of McKamy Creek Road, east of Simmons Road and south of Flower Mound Road, which would attend McKamy. Old Settlers would be split between McKamy and Shadow Ridge.
