Stall for naught: Leopards bully Bulldogs, take control of 13-4A race

MCKINNEY -- Although there are still six games left in the regular season, the Lovejoy boys basketball team assumed control of the District 13-4A Championship race Tuesday night.

The Leopards found themselves in that envious position following a 42-25 win at McKinney North that was plenty significant and unique in its own right.

"This was a huge game for us," said Kyle Herrema, Lovejoy head coach. "It gives us a two-game lead in the standings and we've still got a long way to go but this one gives us a cushion."

Collin Shaw commits to Cornell: Recruiting heats up for several players with Signing Day approaching

Published: Wednesday, January 16, 2013 12:43 PM CST
The dominoes continue to fall as National Signing Day approaches.

The latest football player setting himself up to sign Feb. 6 is Plano East senior wide receiver Collin Shaw, who has verbally committed to Cornell.

"Collin is just an awesome player," said Johnny Ringo, East head coach. "He's a great kid, a tremendous playmaker and unbelievable academically."

Those attributes are similar to another Ivy League player not far removed from East.

"[Shaw] reminds me a lot of Collin Zych (who played safety at Harvard and was in training camp with the Dallas Cowboys)," Ringo said. "Those two are cut from the same cloth."

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Shaw was a unanimous first team all-district selection at wide receiver after hauling in 52 passes for 888 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also may provide a bigger target once he gets to Cornell.

"I swear that kid gets taller every time I see him," Ringo said.

Shaw is the latest, but likely won't be the last commit from East.

Over the weekend, 6-foot-7, 215-pound senior tight end Cody Verhulst visited Air Force while 6-foot, 215-pound senior linebacker Jackson Garrey is considering the University of Chicago and Trinity. Both were second team all-district selections in 2012.

Verhulst and Garrey are seeking to sign Feb. 6, a ticket that was long ago punched by Plano resident JD Waggoner. The 6-foot-2 Jesuit senior defensive end became the 10th commitment in Iowa State's class after pledging to the Cyclones following a visit over the summer.

More recent verbal commitments were made by Prestonwood Christian Academy senior linebacker Mike Mitchell (Ohio State), West senior defensive end Mason Gentry (SMU) and West senior center Parker Murry (Sam Houston State).

The Wolves have also registered their first commit from the Class of 2014 with junior defensive end Lance Cottrell committing to SMU.
