Full schedule of weekend events planned to honor MLK in Plano
Planoites can spend this weekend honoring the legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, whose life will be celebrated with a national holiday Jan. 20, at a variety of events being held across the city.
At 8 a.m. Saturday, a free leadership breakfast will be held at the Collin College Spring Creek Campus' conference center, 2800 E. Spring Creek Parkway. A panel discussion will be held with elected officials, and Collin College students will present a special tribute to King.
Later that day, a community unity walk, grand marshaled by Collin College President Cary Israel, will start at the north parking lot of the Parker Road DART rail station. Assembly begins at 10:15 a.m. for the 11 a.m. walk.
Immediately following the walk, Dale Long will deliver a keynote speech for a special program held in the council chambers of the Plano Municipal Building, 1520 K Ave.
Finally, a health and information fair and free luncheon, featuring more than 25 vendors in various health and education fields, will be held at the Boys and Girls Club Douglass Center, 1111 Ave. H.
On Sunday, a musical tribute to King will be held when the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 920 E. 14th St., hosts the MLK All-Community Choir Concert at 7 p.m. The public is invited to join the choir, with a rehearsal being held at 4 p.m. Sunday.
On Thursday, Williams High School will honor King in its auditorium at 1717 17th St. A pre-program tribute will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by a showcase of student performances from 7 to 8:15 p.m.
The event will feature the winners of the district's 2012 MLK Art Contest. Elementary school students will read their award-winning essays in honor of King, and secondary school student leaders will share stories of their community service work with the audience. Musical entertainment will be provided by the Robinson Middle School Band, Plano Children's Chorale and the Plano Senior High School Choir.
