Volleyball: Lady Dragons alone in first

Published: Tuesday, September 25, 2012 5:23 PM CDT
Southlake Carroll's volleyball team is two games away from completing the first half of District 5-5A competition and the Lady Dragons have yet to suffer a loss.

Carroll picked up a key win in solidifying themselves as a contender in district Friday when they secured a sweep over previously-unbeaten-in-district Keller (25-17, 25-20, 25-14).

"We have two road matches coming up that we need to play well in to finish the first half how we would like," said Arthur Stanfield, Carroll head coach. "So far, we've played really well. We haven't played great in every set, but for the most part I've been pleased."

The win over the Lady Indians put Carroll in control of first.

"They're a really good team," Stanfield said. "They have nine seniors and a couple of girls who will be going on to play in college and it was a great atmosphere. We had a big crowd and Keller brought a lot of fans over, too. It was very exciting and I liked the way our girls responded."

Stanfield added the Lady Dragons got out to a sluggish start before erupting.

"The first set was close until we closed with a big run at the end," he said. "The second set was actually pretty close, too, and we were down early in the third set before we jumped on them and pulled away."

Courtney Inch led the Carroll offense with eight kills, while Taylor Gruenewald and Timarie Nymeyer had four kills and three blocks apiece.

"We've really been working a lot on our blocking so it was nice to see it be effective Friday," Stanfield said. "That was the best blocking we've had in some time."

On Sept. 18, Carroll earned a sweep over Richland and the Lady Dragons' convincing wins have given the team an opportunity to use a majority of its roster.

"Except for that match against Keller, we've had everybody healthy and have been able to use 15 of 16 girls in each match," Stanfield said. "I'm not so much worried about not having any close matches lately as I am that our girls aren't going to be used to playing five-set matches from a physical standpoint. We're using a lot of girls, and they are staying sharp, but they're only playing one or two sets each. We try to be a well-conditioned team during practice and to get ready, but you can't really simulate what is going to happen when you get on the court and get in a tough physical and mental match."
