After a one-year hiatus from the playoffs, the Mesquite boys soccer team has designs on returning to the postseason.

Actually, the Skeeters are not content with merely making the playoffs, as they feel they are in position to do even more.

"We want to be one of the top three teams in District 12-5A and play a couple of rounds in the playoffs," Mesquite head coach Chris Dominguez said.

The Skeeters were not far off the playoff pace a year ago. They finished with a 9-10-4 overall record and their 4-6 mark in district included a number of close games.

Mesquite earned a victory and two ties as it started the season last week at the Carrollton Farmers-Branch ISD Tournament.

Like most teams looking for big changes, there is a lot of work to be done early on as new players are added to the mix and lineups are set.

Among the returning players are senior Walter Cavazos, who has gained some attention from colleges, as well as midfielder Melvin Gutierrez Santos and goalkeeper Christopher Boucher.

Forward Richard Anyaegbu is a newcomer that made an immediate impact with a couple of goals last week and midfielder Sergio Palacios Barrios and defender Paul Nelson are other players expected to step into larger roles.

The Skeeters will continue their non-district slate on Thursday through Saturday at the Wrangler Classic.

Mesquite will host the Skeeter Cup on Jan. 24-26 and then start 12-5A play on Feb. 1 at Longview.
