Wrestling: Local wrestling teams piling up wins early

Published: Tuesday, December 4, 2012 5:35 PM CST
Two weeks have passed, but the record for Coppell's wrestling team is still spotless.

Following a perfect 5-0 mark at the Coppell Round-Up, which they hosted, the Cowboys continued their solid start with a trio of wins at a quad meet at Rockwall Heath.

Coppell notched wins over Heath, Frisco Wakeland and Houston Westside.

"We're out to a pretty good start," said Chip Lowery, Coppell head coach. "We have a lot of returners back and they're doing a good job. We lost a few high-end guys like Caleb Richardson and Sam Rice, and you just aren't going to replace those guys. But as you go down the line, we have more and more guys with experience."

Thus far, Coppell's Daniel Murillo (132) and Gerry Meddaugh (160) are unbeaten on the season.

The Cowgirls, meanwhile, placed fifth out of 22 teams at a tournament it hosted. Frisco Liberty won the event.

Individually, Stephanie Martinez placed second (148), with Anna Woo in third (102) and Helo Dade in fourth (138).

Coppell continues this week with the boys at the Tri-State Invitational at Lake Highlands and the girls in action at the Texas Ladies Classic in Frisco.

"They're a couple of big time tournaments," Lowery said. "It should be good competition for both teams."

Carroll also recently kicked off its season, competing at the Thanksgiving Throwdown Duals in Frisco.

Short-handed partially as a result of Carroll's run in the football playoffs, the Dragons started five freshmen and three sophomores in their 14-man rotation.

Carroll picked up wins over Skyline (twice), Liberty and McKinney, but came up short against Heath. The Dragons were paced by strong showings from Michael Basler, Brandon Magee, Dustin Flegle, Jacob Swoyer and Matt Spuria.

Next up for Carroll is a dual meet Thursday at Frisco Wakeland.

The Colony, meanwhile, started its season Nov. 17 at the Warrior Invitational hosted by Arlington Martin.

The Cougars finished second as a team and had multiple wrestlers on the medal stand.

First-place finishers for The Colony were Colt Stowe (138) and Nick Thornhill (180) with Andrew Brown (132) in second, Jose Estala in second (145) and Jake Green in third (160).
