11-5A GIRLS BASKETBALL: Mustangs crush North Garland to open second half of district play
Published: Wednesday, January 16, 2013 4:06 AM CST
Sachse entered the second half of the 11-5A season in sole possession of fourth place.
The Mustangs certainly have the time and the games to move up, but they could not afford any slip-ups, especially against the last-place team in the district.
Sachse made sure that did not happen on Tuesday as it rolled to a 64-21 victory over North Garland.
The Mustangs improve to 4-3 in 11-5A and keep pace with second-place Lakeview (6-1) and third-place Naaman Forest (5-2). District leader Rowlett (6-0) had a bye on Tuesday.
Sachse quickly opened a nine-point lead and then used a 20-4 run in the second quarter to take a commanding 34-9 advantage at halftime as they were able to comfortably pull away from that point.
Monica Dorsey had 20 points and Courtney Blankenship added 13 to pace the Mustang offense.
If Sachse is going to make a move toward the top of the standings, this is the week to do it. The Mustangs will host Lakeview on Friday before traveling to take on 11-5A leader Rowlett on Tuesday.
Although Sachse has its sights looking up, it must also be wary of who is behind them. Thanks to Lakeview's win over Garland on Tuesday, the Mustangs now have a two-game lead over the Owls on the fourth and final postseason spot.
They can get some help for that playoff berth from their rivals on Friday when the Eagles play at Garland.
FRIDAY
Rowlett completed a perfect run through the first half of the 11-5A season on Friday with a 61-54 victory over Lakeview in a battle of unbeatens.
The Eagles used a 23-5 run in the second quarter to take control, and behind 20 points from Dominique Oliver and nine from Taylee Alexander, was able to hold on in the second half.
Naaman Forest got off to a big start and made it hold up in a 52-46 win over Sachse to move into sole possession of third place.
Sachse got out slowly and Naaman Forest took advantage with a 10-2 run to start the game.
The remainder of the game was nearly dead even, with the Mustangs even outscoring the Rangers in the fourth quarter, but they were unable to overcome the early deficit.
Dorsey led all scorers with 21 points with Lorian Benjamin and Cynthia Matthews adding six each for Sachse. Kaitlyn Holly had 14 points and Micayla Buckner added 12 for Naaman Forest.
