McKinney City Council member Brooks will not seek re-election

McKinney City Council member David Brooks announced Tuesday he will not seek re-election this May.
Brooks, elected to one of two at-large seats in 2009, made the announcement at the end of the City Council's regular meeting. He vied to finish the remaining four months of his term to the best of his ability.
"I do live in the greatest city, I think, in the country, and I've been happy to be a part of leadership here for a short period," Brooks said. "I look forward to good things ahead."
Though spending a relatively short time on the council, Brooks previously served five years as president of the McKinney ISD Board of Trustees and three years on the McKinney Economic Development Corporation and the McKinney Chamber of Commerce board.
With a bachelor's and master's degree from Baylor University, he was chief financial officer at his alma mater from 2000 to 2004. He is a former Rotary Club president and former United Way of Collin County board member.
Brooks founded Crosspoint Church in McKinney and serves as chairman of the board for Noel-Levitz, Inc., a national higher education company.
Mayor Pro Tem Travis Ussery, sitting next to Brooks as he does at most council meetings, applauded Brooks for his job on the City Council.
"You do nothing but the best whenever you come to work," Ussery told Brooks. "I know it and I appreciate it."
In November 2011, through a city charter amendment election, McKinney voters chose to extend City Council terms from three to four years so that the city would be in an odd-year election cycle - elections every two years and in line with Collin County elections.
Ussery, Council member Don Day and Mayor Brian Loughmiller, all elected to their seats in 2009, are up for re-election. In recent months, all three announced to the public they would seek re-election.
Council members Geralyn Kever and Ray Ricchi, elected in 2008, were re-elected to their seats in 2011. Newest Council member Roger Harris was elected in 2011. They will each be up for re-election in 2015.
The month-long filing period for this year's election begins Jan. 30. Election Day is May 11.
