Boys basketball: Cougars drop Frisco Wakeland
By Justin Thomas, jthomas@starlocalnews.com
The Colony's boys basketball team moved above .500 in District 9-4A on Friday as the Cougars knocked off Frisco Wakeland, 67-47.
A balanced scoring attack that saw four players reach double figures was led by Bobby White, who posted 18. Jared Wiseman followed with 17 points, while Blake Chicoine and Aaron Miller chipped in 11 and 10, respectively.
"We played very well," said Cleve Ryan, The Colony head coach. "Any time you can get a win in district and on the road against a team like Wakeland, you'll take it. That was a big win for us. We can always be better, but we really spread the scoring around. We need to have everyone chipping in to be successful."
"It was just one of those nights where everything was falling," Ryan said. "We were able to hit shots and force (Wakeland) into doing some other things. We took our time on our possessions and ate up the clock."
The Colony squad was coming off a third-place finish at the Tommy Thomas Cougar Classic, which it hosted.
The Cougars defeated South Garland (75-47) and Denton Ryan (68-30) before falling against Austin in the semifinals (44-34). The Colony rebounded to defeat Newman Smith in the third-place game (75-72).
Austin lost in the finals against Hebron.
"It was a good experience on how to play during a stretch when we weren't getting a lot of practice," Ryan said. "It's always nice to get a few wins under your belt and I was really just pleased with the combination of everything we did during the weekend."
Jared Wiseman was named all-tournament for the Cougars.
Against Smith, The Colony won in double overtime over a Trojans team it had already faced three times.
"We knew everything each other wanted to do," Ryan said.
Wiseman led the Cougars with 22 points, while Chicoine recorded 18.
Girls basketball: Ellison, Waddell named all-tournament in Prosper for Lady Cougars
For nearly three quarters Friday, The Colony's girls basketball team kept pace with Frisco Wakeland in a District 9-4A contest.
But in the end, the Lady Wolverines and Alana Aguirre had too much as Wakeland pulled away for a 51-36 victory.
Aguirre, the daughter of former NBA star and Dallas Maverick Mark Aguirre, scored a game-high 19 points for the Lady Wolverines, while The Colony was paced by 14 points from Terra Ellison.
"It was actually a four-point game with about four minutes left in the third quarter," said Jason Weese, The Colony head coach. "But then Aguirre just got hot. She stepped up and hit shots and put her team in a position to win."
The Lady Cougars were coming off a 3-1 performance at the Prosper Holiday Classic. In the tournament, The Colony defeated Paris (73-39), Wylie East (40-36) and Lovejoy (43-29) with a loss against Frisco Heritage (47-45).
"The tournament went great for us," Weese said. "We lost in the finals, but we finished second of 16 teams and played pretty well throughout."
Ellison and Libby Waddell were named all-tournament for The Colony.
"I was also really proud of the way that Kylie Covington played," Weese said. "She's done a good job of running the point guard position and attacking the basket and getting to the rim. It's nice to have her back and she gives us a different dimension from the point with her inside and outside game."
The Lady Cougars went on the road Tuesday against Frisco Centennial (results not available as of press time) before hosting Little Elm at 8 p.m. Friday.
